Great innovations in recent times. Makes me wish these things were invented when the C64 were in its popular days.

I hope some people eventually will add this to composers and players, or write a player detect and reroute the original player through this fantastic code.

Thanks for comments, good and less good words. Tune is half-finished I'm sorry, but some missunderstanding made it a spontanious release, plus too many rumours, and too much talk. MP3-file preview is a little under 1MB, because of the filelimit on CSDb, but the tune is 3 minutes. Just make up your own words on verse 1 and 2, and you can sing along, or just whistle if you've got an annoying voice. lol

Actually, I assume this is a codetrick (?!) release, so I've updated it as a Tool. Put any tune in the IRQ as you'd like, you'll get the effect. Jeroen Tel tunes or whatever. :) You need to replace an LDA (OSC3 waveform pointer) inside the IRQ, and find the tune's $d418 (store bandpass+$08 to the NMI's ORA from main IRQ). Remove $d418 in the original tune. You can also tweak the delay offset for the ringbuffer to fit the tune.

Now I only have to test it backwards, or make a loop-recorder. I've tested playing back the OSC3 an octave lower, and it worked fine. This trick is not only for delays. Sorry for this long comment (not a fan of those). :D

Hmm, I think some time ago I shared such an idea with Mixer and Soundemon (about some realitme SID mixing using TCHM code as the output, so you prebuffer a wave+note, and then you play it afterwards along with real SID voice, so this would perchaps result in a synthesizer alike possibilities) but fortunately I'm too lame to code this. Should be left for PROs to do it. I'll get into SID coding on my retirement :>

Yep, the routine reads osciallator 3 output and writes it using a delayed ringbuffer back to $D418. Nice idea by the way and really good work!

i'd seriously like to see a tech demo which shows the effect more obviously... somehow i cant notice a difference at all when pressing space =P (and actually, thats a good thing. the best effects are those that you dont see)

edit: AHA! in vice using 8580+digiboost seems to make the effect much more prominent. NICE indeed.

I must be deaf because on Vice 2.1 with 6581R3 3984 or R4AR 3789 it sounds nearly as same smooth as the mp3. Hmmm...

Beautiful Geir... Love your work and have done so for a lot of years old friend. When the last part in the phoenix demo from shape hit the screen and speakers, and it really often do so here at my place, I am in heaven... a super tune and a lovable part(also mark that this demo has some really marvelous graphics by charles deenen and unitrax, marius skogheim).

The music you produce these days are really good, I give this a 9 because I really think another beginning tune are alot better, the one in the latest shape demo, artillery... but sound quality from this is very very good... it is outstanding sound quality on a tune straight from the synthesizer we all love to love so much. The code for this as you told me is really cool and noone ever did that, that is so interesting to me... it really creates another dimension in a way...

Keep up the good work and I hope you are having a blast doing the new ones. It has too be fun this!

At first I thought, yawn, a two channel tune with channel three being switchable on and off. But on close listening it's - yawn - a three channel sid with the fourth channel being switchable... oh wait, WTF! :-)
Honestly, are you sampling the output of one channel to $D418 or how does this work???

I've listened it straight on real C64, and the quality is quite outstanding :)
And I also love the amazing feeling that the tune itself caused me...touching solo melody!

I'm very curious how Geir made this echo method that made it possible to extend the c64's soundstage, and give the feeling I turned on the FX knob on a HiFi..

Catchy melody and all that, but ... Maybe it's the lack of glitches and bad quality. At first when I heard the echo sound, I thought. Yeah.. they all sound like that anyway... The drums are not echo:ed, are they? My computer here is bad at playing back the audio....
