Yeah, I have noticed the SID emulation on the 1541U is a bit weird. Some times it's perfect but some times it's weird.
I wonder though, if it is possible to modify the firmware so we could have these SIDs as second and third and not as first and second. I mean, when I change the first SID's address to something else, it doesn't replicate what the in built SID does. Akira: NP. You could of course enable emulation for both "first" and "second" SID in 1541U, and only use the audio coming out of the 1541U. ...but then again I guess one might just as well use VICE or something anyway... :P | User Comment Submitted by Akira on 5 December 2012

Akira: I may be wrong now, but it *may* be like this:
If you use 1541U you'll have to emulate both of the SIDs, or only use the internal one. If you only choose to emulate a "second SID" at the same time as you try to use the internal SID as "first SID" then the internal SID will receive ALL the sid writes, including those that were intended to go to the second SID, and the result would of course be a mess. (The second/emulated SID should play only writes to $d500 though).
As I said.. What I wrote above may be counterfactual, but I *think* I read something along these lines somewhere, regarding the sid emulation in 1541U. ...and actually, it makes sense, because:
Perhaps it is easier to understand if I tell you that writes to any multiple of $20 following after $d400 (such as $d420, $d440... ...and all the way up to $d7e0 I think) will affect the SID chip in a standard machine without extra stereo sid hardware, so unless there is some hardware that actively prevents the first SID from getting those other writes for a "second SID", all writes will in fact go into the first SID, even though different adress ranges are used for the writes in the player code. I think the 1541U lacks precisely this "active prevention", which would also explain the problems you get.
While we're at it I might also ask if there is really any *real* stereo SID hardware available for the C64 that allows the user to map the second sid to $d500? I have only seen $d4x0, $dex0, and $dfx0, and never $d5x0, but I may have missed some interface out there.. Well I would be interested to know if anyone with a real dual SID setup got it to run. From what I talked with 4mat it seems the addresses are hardcoded.
I wanna see if this is a problem with 1541U to report it. But I am not sure the dual SID functionality has been tested on anything but VICE.

all I can say it's that the code isn't writing to $d450 (why dx50? it's invalid base address anyway)
in this log from our sid clean tool "w" is address written to, "." is untouched address:

Hey Ian, nope, it sounds completely different. On VICE with the second SID on $D500 it sounds well, but try changing that to a SID on $D450 or something like that and you will hear the difference (and that's how it is sounding in my real machine). Anybody managed to get it running on real hardware using a 1541U-II?

Well I tried it in VICE and it's a mess of noise unless you have a second SID at D500. Now I tried it in my C64C with 1541U and even though I added an emulated SID on D500 I still get the noisy glitchy mess. Any ideas anyone? | User Comment Submitted by Dr.j on 17 November 2012
