zzarko: Yes, or at least something that most VGA-monitors will understand.
In the meantime, a discussion on Forum64.de lead me to experiment with double pixel width in this mode. Half of 50 chars would have been 25 chars, but I was tempted to create a VIC20-like 22x23 text-mode:
