Mankeli: comments seem quite harsh.. I agree Sparkle should be open-source - but maybe that's coming?

-Any- C64 work is hobby work, right? I don't think any of us are making a living from this.

Sparkle has a few improvements over Spindle:-

- it does seem to be faster (though I have no idea whether that's a better load system, better compression, a combination of these or what);

- it occupies a more conveniently low part of memory than Spindle - $0280-3ff instead of $0c00-eff;

- final disk appears to be slightly better packed (ie. more demo parts per disk side!);

- a couple of Spindle bugs (which I had workarounds for but which were an annoyance) have gone away .. most notably that Spin.exe used to crash with no error messages when facing something it didn't like (eg. files about $8000 in size .. or a file that doesn't exist);

- very easy to use - I added Sparkle as an option for our new demo in less than an hour's work ... admittedly, that shows that it's quite close to Spindle in terms of use.

There are a couple of bugs, sure, but I have worked around those, they're very minor and I'm sure Sparta will fix them for a v1.1.

Big thumbs up from me. Open source would be great though.

It is exactly that. I hobby project from a hobby coder. And as such, I would need to google to understand the exact meaning of your first sentence. :)

The name, just like my handle, derives from my real last name and I can’t change that.

Sparkle is clearly inspired by both Spindle and Krill’s loader and it is a hobby coder’s attempt to melt their best features into something I can easily use in my demos. It is not meant as a competition and I wouldn’t compare my coding skills to those two geniuses. But I felt, this was the place to release something C64 related and some may even find it useful or at least interesting. :)

Hmm, dev machine tool is not multiplatform, nor it is open source. Loader featureset itself looks very similar to Spindle, with no improvements. Not even random file access or such. Even the name is similar.

Feels like "chinese clone" of Spindle.

But that being said, nice hobby project I'm sure. Just commenting from an end user perspective. :)

Fantastic work, Sparta!

I held off commenting until I'd had a chance to try this out. I now have our demo linking with Sparkle as well as (to a separate d64) Spindle. The Sparkle version seems slightly faster right now :-)

A couple of minor bugs - but I've PM'ed you about these.

Really, really nice work though. Very impressed. We'll have to wait and see whether we use Sparkle or Spindle for our next trackmo :-)

Seems like good competition for Krill and Spindle, respect. And don't break your head about 35 sector limit, anything beyond 35 sectors usually causes more pain than it's worth. Can't promise we try it (mostly because our framework is hacked Krill and coders can be a lazy bunch hehe), but will definetely talk about it.
