After removing the (emulated) cartridge, the demo works fine for me in Vice 2.3-Linux.

It sometimes works and sometimes not, I guess the decruncher depends on mem configuration.
If you use configure memory (F1) on Action Replay it will work more often. Also loading and running it manually (not using Vice's autostart) seems to increase the probability for it to start.
Replacing my t64 was pointless though since it included the exact same file.

that's correct, but i wonder why. was vice never fixed to work on this demo?

Correct version walks on file D64 only under emulator Hoax.
