Crossbow "forgot" to mention the VIC's internal line and colour buffers (40 bytes and 40 nibbles) in his list of where stuff has to reside in order to be displayed. His raster code performs some action to prevent any bad line condition to be met, so the VIC never reads anything new into its line and colour buffers after fetching the data from the main memory and erasing them in the main memory.
