the UK version by U.S. Gold is an import from Sega's US release, so look into American mags for proper release date | User Comment Submitted by Ed on 15 August 2007
@Hein: I figured so to... But that still does not explain the weird date for the Atari 2600 version.
It really contradicts all the wikipedia, and other stuff saying that the Arcade was first.
Nowadays of course we all know that the game very well may be first, and the movie and versions (narrative) come later ;D
I wonder. Could that very well have been in the 1980s also.
Oh. and happy birthday Hein, very much in advance.

A really good spy is needed to find the proper release date for Spy hunter, that's all I am saying.

oh well, dec 31 1969 that is PHP (Unix) timestamp = 0. On some sites, that's my birth date. ;) | User Comment Submitted by Ed on 15 August 2007
Ok guys! Thanks ya'll for sorting my life out.
Now I am free to go on with that mystery finally solved.
It was in 1985 I first played that game...
But on the other hand I am not quite sure I trust any of your
comments or sources. I have counted at least around 10 sites and
many crediting this release back to 1983 or 1984. All the other platforms
this game was converted to has other dates.
The game release seem to date back all the way to the 4th of October 1983,
which would mean that there are many groups that cracked this game
quite some time after the release. Could that be impossible? I don't know
but there is some issues left to solve concerning the source of information
where get their facts from.

(search after spy hunter)
The game got released on the Nov 12th, 1982 for the Atari 2600.
For the Arcade the release date says: Dec 31, 1969. Hmmm

(C) 1983 Bally Midway refers to the arcade version, the c64 conversion was released in 1985 as stated below. | User Comment Submitted by Hein on 14 August 2007
Reviewed in Zapp, which got first released in May '85. (See cassette cover)
And please, no more private messages about your child hood, I really don't want to know. Tsk, n00b, you're even younger than me. ;)
but, ok, fair is fair, cracked in late 1984.. | User Comment Submitted by Ed on 13 August 2007
Your link did not work, I am afraid. But it seem resonable somebody stole 2 years of my life ;D
Everything that concerns that release on csdb has faulty data then...

Looks a little like (C) 1983 or? my eyes aint as good as they used to. | User Comment Submitted by Hein on 13 August 2007 User Comment Submitted by Ed on 13 August 2007
I poked around some and found this:
http://www.xgd.com/id/1606
It clearly says 1983. But the dates vary for the various computer platforms.
I am not sure how accurate the site content is, but I am
quite sure of on what has happened in my life and not. | User Comment Submitted by Sixx on 13 August 2007
Was Spy Hunter actually released 1983 on the C64? I doubt it because the original arcade game was released december 1983. I belive the C64 conversion infact was released 1985. | User Comment Submitted by Ed on 13 August 2007
This is probably the first car game i ever played on the C64.
The funny thing is that I wasn't even aware back in the day that it was totally "hot" when I was home at a friends place and ran it.
The year was 1983.
