Twoflower: if you transform your own work. e.g.: pencil drawing, then work on it further. that's ok.
but converting someone else's work is not ok. no matter how much you work on it afterwards. the whole basis is another work, from now on it will not be your work.

Going back to the earlier comments: conversion doesn't hinder artists from doing anything. Conversion should be concidered a tool just as any other. Workstages should be mandatory so people can judge the craft+process and provide a view on how an image was created. The craft shouldn't be the main focus - in my eyes, the end result, the choice and treatment of the motive and the process are the interesting parts.

@Hein Workstages were normal and mandatory on the 90s Amiga / PC scene too. On C64 they were not because the machine did not really have (yet) the capabilities nor tools to make decent conversions. These days it's all different as you can create decent conversions very easily. Workstages should be mandatory with any GFX compo on C64 and I hope the organizers pay note to this as well. It'd also be nice that more and more artists would upload the whole process instead just the final image. Glad to see some are doing it already.

@CopAss: thanks for your Input, much appreciated. I will take care of this at future occasions.

Retroluzzer:
it happens to everyone, even the bigger parties. where they pay attention to this.
The conversion hurts artists who spend long hours creating images. these works are born from nothing by their talent.
it is worth laying down the rules:
- own work, if you make it based on another artist's picture, you must indicate that.
- conversion is not allowed
- work phases 3-4 pictures or timelapse

At least this converted picture beat an honest handdrawn picture by a kid. ;) Maybe workstages should become mandatory for all graphics competitions.

I'm sorry that this causes so much outrage. I asked Zsolt for a picture and I knew that it based on a conversion, simply because I was the one who suggested the picture it is based on. I wanted to have at least one picture in the compo the audience can relate to, and I guess it simply won because it's Captain Future and the audience didn't care how it was made - me neither.

You know, we don't do compos normally, it's the first attempt on doing this. I had no advice, no suggestions, no contributions, even though I published the compo months ago. This is the sad point of the story, but I don't blame anyone - I just try.

So I started asking around people I know and they helped me out so that we had something to show. If you bash someone, then bash me instead of Zsolt.

Now everybody knows everything about it and I apologize for not being prepared better and inform everyone about the origins of the picture, but that's the only thing I apologize for. Besides that, it was a fun party and people enjoyed the compo for what it was - a special occasion.

I tried. I failed in some way. I will try again and fail better. ;)

Convert without statement it's a convert, so 1/10. When uploading something like this I'd encourage the party organizers to include a note it's a conversion.

Don't get me wrong, neither want to defend converting nor praise this release as great art.

I mostly referred to the outcries directed at orga - and after a single glance at the other pictures in that compo I don't understand what's so scandalous here. And I blamed the not-disqualifying of this on this being a rather young event.

If it's about ranking, it would make more sense to complain about blind audience/voters.

TheRyk: you could even write there who is the author of the original work and how it was converted. it is written everywhere that you cannot use someone else's work.
what works is that you draw based on the original work, but do not convert it.
it's a completely different story if you transform and pixelate your own drawing.
I don't like profiting from someone else's art.
ok, this is just the "demoscene", but let's not steal.

Winning with a convert might mean bad karma, yeah. But I guess some of you have a wrong idea of this party. In its current state, orgas are happy about any entry they get. And if you look at the other gfx in that compo, they are either mediocre or also use converted stuff IINM (apart from the quite good PETSCII by AGod which simply had the bad luck of being the only PETSCII and thus competed against BitMap/whatnot).

Bottom line: Not much to see here :)

@The Sarge: I thought it was original, but gosh, it's just a blant convert! Thanks for sharing!
Also leaves the question on how compos are governed.

Especially participating in any graphics-compo with converted stuff is very much not the right spirit.. :-(
I really wonder why talented guy like zscs would do this in the first place..?
