For 1993 this was kickass stuff. It's still enjoyable even today.
Vectors, bobs, fullscreen picture multiscrolling, stretching in lower border... Only thing I'm missing in this oldskool demo are some nicely plotted 3D objects.
It's funny though that HCL was sure to win and came in 2nd. Never sell the bearskin before you shot the bear and all that. lol
The bob scroll-text was deep. HCL as a sage; who would have thought.
I guess C64 will survive as long as there are people alive who love it. Money (greed) is indeed the biggest threat to mankind.
As for the Earth; well, it will melt into a liquid ball once the sun reaches the red giant phase in a few billion years. The sun will probably swallow Earth at that point. | User Comment Submitted by HCL on 29 April 2015
@Karmic: :) Haha.. i had to read that scroller again. Really deep thoughts there ;). | User Comment Submitted by Karmic on 29 April 2015
I just have to comment on HCL's scroll in the shadebobs part.
It's unbelievable just how wrong he was.
Aside from that, this is overall a very cool demo! | User Comment Submitted by bepp on 7 October 2010
Love the music, hires B/W sinus filler, vectors and the large charset in the between-parts scroll! | User Comment Submitted by Jammer on 25 October 2009
best shade bobs on c64 \o/ | User Comment Submitted by HCL on 21 May 2008
@JA: not magically fast. I waste alot of memory on mul-tables, mostly because i didn't know any better way of doing mul :). That's not slow at least.
The line routine is not the fastest, it's the add-bcc-inc type, i think the 16-bit add is generally faster but not in all cases. I never made any measurement on which line is really faster on *real* objects. Probably a combination of both.
Also i do an unrolled clear-screen, which is slower than re-drawing the lines on such small objects (low number of lines).
I remember having a strange hide-face routine, calculating a correct(?) cross-product. But again, the mul is fast.
The over-all accuracy is poor, but at that time i guess it was ok. The whole thing is single-buffered, you can clearly see the artifacts, but i think that makes it look faster, since some part of the object is always moving in some way :P.
My idea was to do everything like Horizon did in Last Tractor 3, but a little bit faster. I don't think i succeeded.
Some anecdotes.. I remember the TCC audience was bored to death of filled vectors, but of some reason when the TS2-vector came up on the screen everyone was screaming!! Probably because it was from a Swedish group :). | User Comment Submitted by JackAsser on 20 May 2008
Is it just me getting old and lame or aren't the vectors here exceptionally fast? | User Comment Submitted by Stan on 31 May 2007
Naah, Wonderland X is slightly better IMHO. Both would have deserved it, but sometimes the competitions were that outstanding like that. | User Comment Submitted by Dwangi on 1 April 2003
Should have won TCC compo. |
