I've just seen this for the first time .. interesting. This demo is also doing stream-from-disk during the scroll, just like we did in Memento Mori - and I -know- exactly how hard that is.

Compared to the scroller in Memento Mori, this one has interlace (and so needs to keep much more memory available for gfx) and alters the sprite colours part way down the pic.. but, with that, the bitmap scroll isn't interleaved into the border-opening and it seems to scroll at 1px every 12-13 frames (compared to MM's 1px every 2 frames). It's also a 176px tall screen rather than the 191.8 (accounting for the "gaps" at top-left and bottom right) as Memento Mori.

Really really nice, though, it makes me wonder about what could be done next in this field.

As a 'demo', it runs a bit thin. Just 2 parts, but both are excellent.

I like the way this gels together, the music and design fit nicely with the picture, the twister looks very nice as well! Leon, now you've done the biggest Drazlace pic, go for the largest IFLI :) Tense Years

Since I've been away from the scene for over 15 years, the twister looks fresh to me! But generally speaking I prefer stuff that looks cool but is easy to code over something that's hard to code but looks like shit. So new ideas rather than reiterating over the same old effects with only quantitative improvements. But maybe that's just me, I'm lazy that way. I love a good starfield, though ;-)

@PAL, for info on the origin of the picture you can find reference in the comments of Song of Fall.

While I would have basically fallen over myself back in the day over the twiser, I've seen so many lately it's just sort of "yay another twister." (Even tho it's probably the start of some of the best twisters ever designed coming up (: )

But the picture I just love (:

Skate: Hehe, actually I was serious, but I realized how it would be interpreted. :-P

Some things are simply impossible by design; while it would be possible to put some kind of upscrolling hires graphics in the sideborder it wouldn't be anything near NUFLI. :-)

the twister is as we all can see one of the better ever created... the music is ok... I lack a melody lead in most sid tjunes of today, and also a stronger in this one but a good sound it is... the real magic in this demo is not the coding, still the coding is pretty amazing when thinking of the hardware it works perfect on... but the image... leon... really... I think you create something like this that is world top and then you release other stuff that is not. This image is truly amazing too me... it is just so lovely... in all aspects it is truly amazingly good... is this really a true draving by you I just take my hat off and eat it... if it is photo manupilaton and then convert and then fixing I still take my hat off, but I will not eat it... looking really bloody marvelous this one...

Ohhh... it reminds me that a demo really must not include 1000 parts... a effect and true to it makes it a 1000...

Clarence: How about Song of Fall - NU Broad Edition with Lars' twister gfx-upgrade and NUFLI'ed version of the graphics? :D

Edit:
Broad Twisted Edition or Broad Twisting Edition would be cool names too.

Yeah and it's IMPOSSIBLE! (Oh noes did I mention the *I* word). ;)

very, very nice. it is obvious that this picture scroller plays with the upper limits of c64. its slow speed feels tragically a bit basic and distracts from the actual archievement. imo the song of fall pic is an excellent choice (like the clowdy look of the tree expansion). not to mention this highly dynamic twister intro. i am impressed.

Jackie, might have been mine, the 2 character long filename has to be closed with byte 0 in Krill's latest loader version, but I heard this info too late. :)

What are these series of misreading about? Borad, Fail??? Paul and Deekay, you should get new glasses. ;)

Thank you for the comments and votes. There is a little misunderstanding, this release was NOT meant to be a demo but just a scrolling picture! It was Clarence who added the pretty intro with the cool twister in the last minutes!

Inspiration:
Royal Arte by Booze Design, HCL code and Valsary border gfx, I think you would have guessed it.

Short background story:
My picture 'Song of Fall' was released and uploaded on CSDb on december 29, 2006. (Some of you might remember the debate abotu copy/no copy and Mermaid's and Mirage's funny replica as well...) Not much later in the beginning of 2007 I've extended the picture with the foliage. I made two drazlace pics. On the first one I deleted half of the original pic and started to pixel the second one upon it.
When the 2 screens were done, I transferred them to pc and with Soci's view64 I made two screenshots (bmp format with 16 color hires) and merged them. Then in Photoshop I extended the pictures with 2 sprite wide layers on both side (keeping an eye on the colo-restrictions in those areas). The reason why I picked this pic was because there weren't too many colors in it and it was easier to extend it to sprites in the borders. The background color is mid-gray, so the sprites got it too, the 2 common sprite colours are red and orange, the only variable color is the sprite specific individual color which is in most case light-gray or brown.

Then I had to search for a coder to put it all togther ... There went many e-mails with x,y programmers, but actually nobody dare to do it, because it's an enormous difficult job, memory problems, sprite handling, interlace handling etc... eventhough the pic was already done in the middle of 2007 (2 drazlace pics with 2 bitmap sprite layers).

Clarence took the job with difficulty and worry, but thank god I managed to talk him into it. Also the nearing Arok 11 party and it's democompo deadline with the trophy gave some extra inspiration as well... ;_)

Final conclusion:
My goal was to create a "big" and "impossible" pic which is similar to the one seen in the Booze demo. I wanted to try out where are the limits for the c64 in interlace mode... I simply wanted to make a picture of a scale, resolution etc which nobody ever done before me on the c64... I don't know if anybody got some inspiration by this, but I hope this is a proof again to show that NOTHING is impossible on the c64, this little machie (our common favortie) can do ANYTHING, if creative, tireless programmers, graphicians and musicians put themselves fully behind a project!

Picture size:
416*400 (208*400 multicolor interlace)

Impressed by the code, especially on twister, side-borderless interlace, and simultaneous scroll. And Leon, I'm impressed by your efforts with the spirals in the tree. You're stretching your artistic perspective!

Thanks for the reactions.

@Stein Pedersen, I agree. Btw, good to see you here... :)

@Mirage, will give it a thought, thanks for the quick gfx-upgrade. :)

@HCL, press shift-lock to see the 'real' speed of the scrolling until the buffer runs out from time to time.

I always read "Song of FAIL"...
What's there is really good, but there should be more. Actually "the demo is too short" is a compliment, since people want to see more of it.

Lovely production! but the scroller is a little bit slow imo >;). I know you have like 0 time for loading, so it's no surprice really. Like the twister also!!

GRG, give us *mooore* of your lovely music!!

Great music and beautiful graphics. It gives a nice feeling of melancholy, who could ask for more? In the old days demos were often 1 or 2 parts. Why these "rules" of what a demo should be like? They are works of art and contain their creators' talent, hard work and dedication, whatever the form. Respect!

[08/23/09|05:05:51] <@rambones> DeeKay: that demo is fuck boring. 1 twister, 1 upscroll pic, wtf ? LOL only music is good, rest is crap
[08/23/09|05:12:25] <Mixeri> well, nice work imho :)
[08/23/09|05:12:41] <@rambones> codewise, but entertainment = 0

Rambones, The Most Talented Scener Of All, has spoken.

(PS: Love the production, can't wait to experience the next masterwork!)

I did read "Borad edition" for a second there and expected Sascha Baron Cohen to be sitting on the chair in a Mankini! 8)
Woohoo for the idea and the twister, gotta say i was a bit disappointed to see it still is interlace though, i was expecting clarence to one-up us here after our static "song of fall" in Crest Slide Story!
Not much a fan of the music either...

This demo get a high vote from me due to that i think the parts are difficult to code. The twister and the border picturescroll adds up to a high standard. :-)

who the fuck is irwin? he gives shitty notes to the best prods and decreases their value. what is the worst - he uses marks like 3 or 4 that fuck the rating up more than silly 1. booo! back to the topic - absolutely fantastic twister and ifli of impressive size. pity that it's so short.
