The Annapurna of scrollers. You can set out climbing towards making something this incredibly great, but you will most likely die trying. This belongs on top of the charts, because that is exactly what this is, the pinnacle.

Still the greatest scroller ever created on the C64.

Love this one. And the comment thread - wow.. wth? Who in their right mind could give this one anything but a 10?

Fantastic.

C'mon database is a truly Fine one file effect that was challenged already (even by it's creator) should be stacked up together with proper one file demo?

I find scrollers boring; but this one is very well executed. Technically brilliant.
Bob, you nutter! You almost turn a 64 into an Amiga.

No, guess we could not. I think Censor could not match this too.. it is insanely beautiful this scroller, much better than the one in wonderland.

Submitted by Jurbo on 11 June 2013
Wow - Really beautiful and fluid, once you back off from the screen a couple of meters! ;)

Somehow this doesn't look like a C64 demo at all to me - maybe it's because there's so much different colours on the screen at once. A fantastic example of what the C64 can be pushed to do nowadays!

ok CENSOR... We are almost ready with our thoughts for our demo now, we have been working so hard the last 10 days that i never have been so occupied ever with c64 demo creating, not even close to this... Tomorrow we will reveal the final plans for the rest of the team and best of friends and we will have a blast but struggle with completing it! We do this to fight, we do not step down for Adrian, Bob, CRT, ekoli, Geggin, Lavazza, Magnar, Mirage, NiM, Prowler, Swallow and Yazoo! We will face you head on, gloves on... fight night, main event of the evening no matter what!

We are set, we can not do more, other than executing code, make music and pixel graphics for all effects and art and time it as great as we can now, the thing we hold now will be our demo and it will battle at the thrilla!

Fairlight, Offence and Prosonix - Two months plus demo is flying and will land at BFP 2013!

There is no reason to complain about a 7, or 5. If someone decides for himself that one-part entries go in the range 1-5 and multi-file demos 1-10, it's totally fair. If everyone just tries to be consistent in their voting, and gives an honest vote compared to their votes on other entries, everything is fine.

Submitted by JackAsser on 21 May 2013
iirc I did VSP + updating colors on a static bitmap before... it was done in Sphaeristerium. Bob did it in a new (great!) way of course. Still hard to justify a 10 from a coding point of view. So let's be realistic then: music, not my cup of tea. Graphics and presentation I give 12 because it's really awesome. Code I give 7 which gives an average of (6+10+12)/3 ~= 9. Hence I'll raise my 7 to a 9.

Submitted by The Phantom on 21 May 2013
I can't code this, so I dislike it.

Y'all lost me with the polish, mine is a lot off.. I suppose I know enough to get by though, eh? Zimne Piwo...

Nice work Bob. Zimne Piwo for everyone!

Submitted by Wisdom on 21 May 2013
Or you could say JackAsser also did nothing new ever, even about his portal engine in Andropolis, as vector worlds date back at least to 1985 or so. So it was new technically, but not so much visually.

Here, even if this would not be new technically, it is very, very fresh visually.

I believe that when talking about "new", it is not really possible to take it purely from a technical or aesthetics point of view. It should be taken as a whole.
User Comment
Submitted by Oswald on 21 May 2013
Using VSP and this technique together IS something new. Using your argument you could also say HCL did nothing new with border sprites & gfx & fpp since all of them was done individually previously. Or the chessboard zoomer+hand zoomer, etc.
User Comment
Submitted by JackAsser on 21 May 2013
@bob: I guess I'm just being ignorant, please forgive me for that and please enlighten me! :) I assumed this was done with a static bitmap that you scroll with VSP and update the colors with generated unrolled STA-code, or am I completely wrong?
User Comment
Submitted by Bob on 21 May 2013
Nothing new? I don't get your point TBH.
User Comment
Submitted by JackAsser on 20 May 2013
@bob: a demo packed with quality stuff like this backed by cool gfx and music would be 10 directly. As a standalone effect it can not be 10 to me since i vote for demos. Also since i'm a coder i know nothing new was invented here. That said I want to emphasize that i think this effect is flawlessly executed and that i'm utterly impressed and that u have my deepest respect. :) booze on bfp? Hmmms... U never know!
User Comment
Submitted by Bob on 20 May 2013
Jackasser: 10 => 7 ?
well it was supposed to be in our next big demo as stated in the scroller and we took it to DOTY.. could only be one FX of this scale to fit in the mem req.. well it is what it is.. thx for your 10/10 previously I guess that what counts for me ;) but the debate about separate top list is now even more evident due to vote adjustment.

to my question to you:
Will Booze come and add to the thrilla in Helsingborg then ??

three thrilla of thrillz then?

CENSOR DESIGN with BOB in the front have challenged FAIRLIGHT, OFFENCE and PROSONIX to battle THE MAIN EVENT at the demo competition at BFP 2013 - We say hell yes, bring it on... bring your pixels, code and your music, we will give you one hell of a beating .... We had absolutely no demo planned and no parts... because we are all on demo vacation, but BOB, you screamed out for it - SO WE WILL BRING IT! In two months pluss we will CREATE and show a demo that battle and beat you! Our two months plus demo will make an impact on you -it will show you that we are the best there was, the best there is and the best there will ever be - two months plus demo coming up!

Damned Censor-DICE competition...

Bob, are you done yet with that early Z-prepass, deferred tilebased lighted scroll renderer we talked about?
User Comment
Submitted by Magic on 8 May 2013
On Pouet.net you could say this would be an intro not a demo. So this is the #1 Top intro on CSDB while Coma Light#13 and EoD are shared #1 Top Demos :)

Next to this I came hard and are still very horny for more Censor Design intro's demos diskmags and musicdisks!

Good to have Mirage actively back aswell next to Bob. Magnar should not code so much in the DICE neighbourhood though ;)

and no#1 in the demo charts ??? well... WOW... thx!

Submitted by PAL on 6 May 2013
daah! censor is lame... Why did you steal my idea for a part BOB and release it? You arse! And even put in my early test graphics and state it is mirage? This is so lame of you and goes into yet another line of bad behaviour from your side.

When that is said, I SALUTE YOU! You are back and you rule and the whole censor vibe is so cool to vitness, that you also came back from beyond the walls of the scene and now are hammering them walls down is just a great win for all! I just love it!

edit... i had to downscale my vote, because i really think the music is cool in some time and then it is just annoying, magnar you are the best dude, sorry to say this... but it should for me have been something else... i know it is lame of me but atleast i am all honnest! I just do not dig it... it is nice and all but it should have been nemesis the warlock or something epic grand or big as the scroller is big bad jolly but it is there screaming at you and the music is like jazz... pum pum loolemuuhhh pim pim pim pim dim dahhh dim... it should be in our ears annoying uss or bugging us screaming out we are censor and we are the best...the fun is in the start in a way... when scroller come it should have been that for me... again i am sorry for telling this in a way but with that it would be the absolutely the best... love you!

edit ii: it is really great, just wrong style on music!

wow, wow, wow. color cycling ftw

and about avarage votes:

if you want them you have to deal with them. makes no sense anyway if some people start to reduce their own votes to adjust the charts. look at the top releases - the votes got higher and higher and it is mostly about the 0.3 points to ten...

then what is the value of a single file demo - in terms of a single super-awesome effect compared to a multipart one-der?
what is about using the csdb vote system for competition results?
what about categories that do not match by definition (4 color gfx next to full color for example)?

but maybe it is just me. i am no fan of avarage votes anyway, just feels wrong for the graphicians charts for example that mermaid stais on pos 19 with more times 10 points than any other person above (except mirage) received votes in total.

Magnar, colorcycle is used for short term, people using it know what happens.
User Comment
Submitted by HCL on 6 May 2013
@Dwangi: Angry? WTF, EoD #3 on top10 and i quit the scene ;) Well, single parts don't belong on the same ranking list as 2-sided demos of course. This again shows that the top10 can not be taken too seriously, which i know that many ppl do.

[edit] ..so as Magnar points out, people have started to ajust their votes on single parts to [0-8] instead of [0-10], which is also a very strange solution.. It just feels crippled, so let's end this out-of-topic discussion.[/edit]
User Comment
Submitted by Magnar on 6 May 2013
No worry, Dwangi. People have already started to move their 10's to 8's in order to restore the top-10 list as it was before. Just give it a few more days to balance out. :)

Regarding comments given on colorcycle. Well, it seems so simple: lda $d801,x sta $d800,x right?

The source code of this production is alone over 2000 textrows and I know for a fact that Bob has been working on optimizing and making this part into what it is for several months.

My point is; This is not just simple color cycle. - And that is probably why at least I, myself, have never seen anything like this production on the C64 before either.

Completly awesome. Normally I'm quite tired of "Censor Scrollers" and consider them moderate to lame (i.e. too much code reuse). BUT THIS WAS FUCKING AWESOME! Good job Bobban. Straight 10/10 from me!

Edit: 7/10 now once the shock is gone and sanity / rationality has returned. Don't misunderstand me though, this effect kicks ass, but it's "just" an effect. I wish I was the one who coded it.

Very nice production but one point deduction for the blocky appearance, so only 9/10 from me.

One more release like would actually motivate the deadline for DOTY-2013 be moved somewhere into the year of 2014!

All I can say is AWESOME!
