One of the best graphics for the C64, I have it on my floppy disk from that era, for me it's a phenomenon! IFLI!

I mean, personally I quite like seeing the reference for this one because this way I get to see how much better roder's version is :) Much clearer separation of subject from background for a start - the two central characters really pop!

@Flotsam The posts around Talent have brought this subject back to a lot of people’s attention, but “outing” releases has been going on for years. When I first became active in the late-90s this was already a thing (there was the "Art that Isn't" website and so on). And true, everyone knowledgeable about the scene knows things were different in 1995, but is csdb only about documenting information for people who are sceners?

@Deev, I disagree. Because of the discussion around Talent's work people are now overly sensitive about these matters. It was a good and needed discussion, but it's time to move on and state the facts without feeling like it's an insult. Everyone who knows anything about the history of the scene, knows that it was OK to not mention the sources at the time, so mentioning it everytime now would be redundant.

@CreaMD, you're absolutely right, I should have added to trivia. Thought about that myself too, but it was too late already. :)

OK, need to stop before the mods start bashing about this discussion not belonging in the comments section... which is true. Let's just enjoy a great picture that awakens emotions in the teenage boy living inside me. :) The one that digged Conan comics and later the movie like crazy.

@Flotsam I agree there's nothing wrong with adding the source image, but if csdb is a document of scene history it's perhaps also helpful to have a note that at the time of this release, almost everyone was openly re-drawing other people's artwork and it wasn't considered wrong (I think this has now been covered in the comments anyway)

I would use trivia for that. It's probably the most suitable place. What CSDB admins think?

Of course, if the info is provided by author of entry, he should use production notes.

@Flotsam Yes, I think it's good thing to show the refs for old pics too. That indeed helps as well to judge the pic somehow – to see if it's been improved by the artist with something own or how well it technically succeeds. Most of course aimed to copy the original as perfectly as possible while later works might use multiple refs (as a collage) or mix self-made with partial copying.

Yeah, I noticed that it's not just an automatic conversion. It's certainly made with love.

My point wasn't to diss the pic or the pixeler in any way. I just added relevant info to a CSDB entry and that's it. No feelings involved. I'm hoping that especially with the ongoign discussion, active artists would add this info proactively to the release itself or to respective CSDB entry, but for past work I see no harm in adding the original sources / inspiration where it's obvious. It doesn't take away anything, only adds to the DB.

It's like acknowledging that Rob Hubbard got inspiration from well-known songs, but adding his own technical and artistic value to each song to make them perfect for C64.

Yeah, it's actually quite awesome that Roder choose medium full shot and not detail and achieved to layout out the whole scene into the image pixel by pixel with unrealiable IFLI editors available at that time. He even worked on background. Admirable achievement, on it's own.

@Flotsam This seems to have used the original as a ref but looks hand-pixeled besides it. That’s something that prolly 90% of that era images are.

I think I've made at least five images based on Conan and another five on some random fantasy stuff. Will ref those someday soon when I have time to do it and manage to search the original refs.

As written several times: when looking back in time now 80s–90s seem to be merely a technical era – just to get something look realistic was a huge task as the tools were so awful. This era was followed by conversion flood after ppl got access to scanners and first digital cams got common. After that there was a counter-reaction with debates. Now we’re facing AI and all the powerful conversion tools and the discussion is on again. I’d sum it all like that.
