Afair he took Boss which already is most "professional" choice, don't know for sure if it's really fastest of the old ones but guess so. Never tried newer ones such as MOSpeed.

It's hard to say it, but I gotta say it: Best choice is always to learn assembler :) If I had back the time I wasted with BASIC and compilers, I could already rule the world as assembler coder.

I like breakout games, like Arkanoid. This game is quite an original idea. A shame about the slow motion when playing. Since it was made in BASIC I wonder how much results would differ between Boss Basic and Blitz, Austrospeed :)

performance is okay for compiled basic, but some problems with overlflow reg $d010 of ball at beginning of level/after loss of life and the "you need to load again due to memory lack" stuff is of course another shortcoming. wonder if any crackers bother to fix these issues, decompiling Basic Boss is quite painsome and fixing buggy stuff in the compiled code ain't as trivial as adding some trainer. ideas of combining these well-known mini games with breakout is cool, however. overall, not a blast but good one, worth playing :)
