Based on an inked pencil sketch. Four colours in charsets. Another test image for raster colouring.

This was another test on colourmixing. My aim was to try to get new tones out of C64. Technically this is very much like ‘Mature’ pic with MC charmode and sprites on top and bottom borders.

@Joe If you take a closer look on the workstages, you notice that I indeed used one colour for the highlights and then TWO colours for the 2nd tone, after which there ain’t ‘the third’ dark tone at all but black (that is $d800). The whole idea was not to dither with black but as little as possible because of this – black dithering would cause the pic go much more messy indeed. This as well because of the fact that the image has A LOT of details – there ain’t a) room for dithering b) dithering would mess the details. The fact of leaving that dark tone out makes the image bit ‘crispy’ which is OK – I trusted the plain b/w pixeling in this case. Then the question: “why use two midtones?” – this is where I get to the actual colourmixing… when using two midtones I can really do mixing with dithering instead of just the rasterlines. You may notice that though the colouring is bit ‘horizontal’ it is not that as much as it was with CF’s and my first test (‘Mature’ pic). Instead of doing shadows with the dark tone I’ve used approach where the parts of the image ‘in light’ are using warmer colours (yellowish, red) and the parts ‘in shadow’ use colder tones (greenish, blue). Please check the workstages.

I’m myself happy how this came out. As stated, it’s maybe bit too messy for most’s taste. The colour mixing works as I planned and the image is producing tones that look kinda non-C64.

And yes: take a look at it on a real CRT, works best there.

The pic should work properly on the latest updates of VICE.

Thanks again to Copyfault for the code!

@Ian: careful with this one:
> 0952 86 01 ea
to make it works in X64 or ccs

This replaces the SHX-opcode by a STX $01 basically, which makes the programm continue all the time, but this might lead to an instable raster irq.

I do use the SHX-method to sync the timer since some time now since it works like a charm on the real deal. *If* someone is in urgent need of a version that works with older emulators, pm me and I'll create a proper fix. I think it'd be better to update your emus, really...

And commenting on the pic: great one, though really experimental. This new approach with colour changes in mc charset mode does offer colour schemes never seen b4 on c64, also here. Me likes!

I really need to check this on the real thing. It's nice, but imo not as strong as Skullflower or Mature. It's kinda messy (as you stated in the slide text.) Maybe some larger areas of black could have helped break up the composition and balance it a bit more. Still a worthy endeavor :)

Really Fleshy Work. Lovely to see. I know if I had that one black paint in my hand I would start to dither.. A lot! And check this and that.
Beautiful work Tommi! Really good use of that extra "raster lined color" you get!

Ah, part from that. Does the .prg actually work on the emulator?

So much more to investigate here! Start digging guys, you will enjoy it!
