The author writes:

Back when I was still learning how to program, Telengard was one of the very few programs we had in the house that was written mostly in BASIC. We had very few resources for learning programming when I started so I used it quite a bit. It was also the first program I modified, increasing the dungeon levels from 50 to 200. Later, I realized that the best protection you could get in the game still couldn't protect you from the weakest creatures on level 200 of the dungeon. So I modified the bonus progression on items to be more aggressive.

Back in November, I came across DDI's release and rather enjoyed it. I enjoyed it enough that it inspired me to roll my own. So I decided to pull out my old modified Telengard and modify it some more. The goal was to enhance the graphics, speed up the dungeon rendering, and add a character menu to load characters. I liked some of DDI's work, like using the RUN/STOP key to pause and the colored highlighting of command keys in text. So I have incorporated those features as well.

Along the way I decided I wanted a few additional features and implemented them, including speeding up the character sheet rendering, adding support for longer character names and mixed case letters, and adding location tracking so that treasure will not randomly appear in the last 100 locations you have visited. These are saved to disk with the character so they will stick with you. With the increased speed of the re-plot routine (now done in machine language), this feature should encourage you to explore more. The intent of this project was to bring these graphical and performance enhancements to the game while keeping the same atmosphere during game play.

I've included a complete list of enhancements in the release notes. The zip file also includes a CBM PRG Studio project that I used to build the game, a GIMP file that I used to generate the graphics, and a spreadsheet I developed to assist me in the development. Let me know if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions.
