The original game is also terribly buggy with things on screen becoming out of sync with the scroller, and it will crash too when it gets bad enough. It's not very well coded, I've been into it before. The game is incomplete and seems like a preview for a multifiler, that got cancelled.

It seems that enabling only sprites/sprites collision also gives you the invincibility against backgrounds....
Enabling only background collisions instead gives you the correct behaviour, you die against sprites...
