This trainer not tested.
Typos in doc multiple times, but that's the least of the problem.
You can not finish the game just playing it.
The trainer allows you to collect items and it keeps keys/potions on the collected level.
Which causes after maxing out you can not collect / go through the item.
Which leads only trouble on:
LVL 28 already as you not able to go through the key.
LVL 31 after using portal you stack because the next 2 portal only works back and forth so no way around.
LVL 33 3 keys blocks he way to get out
LVL 39 the portal ports you to the same room creating endless loop
Only way to get to next level in all this case if you wait for the time to expire and get all walls turn to exit.
LVL 40 you disapear and get ported back to lvl 001.... wow...
This was the point were I gave up.
It also misses the trainer for the treasure room for "unlimited time" which would be a nice touch.
Another one is the "start from level" option.
Level skipper?
Save/load game?
The only good thing I can say: did not crash at any point!
(not sure how many want to play in loop for the first 40 lvl...) | User Comment Submitted by alwyz on 30 January 2019
I *DID* onefile the start sequence. :) unless you're referring to something else | User Comment Submitted by Twoflower on 29 January 2019
No need to backport it though. The DD engine (both tape and disk) runs the original levels just fine, just located a little differently in the case of the disk-version. Check them out - best tape DD is probably Gauntlet and best diskversion is probably the quite strange Gauntlet +3. Regarding this version - I find it a little bit sloppy not to have levelpacked or onefiled the start-sequence (in some cases this was actually done back when the game arrived in 1986). IFFL of the levels would also have been beneficial. Still no big issues - fresh to see a new version of this. | User Comment Submitted by Neo-Rio on 29 January 2019
I always felt that the Deeper Dungeons had a more stable engine... I don't know. Maybe later re-releases of Gauntlet had fixed the game-breaking bugs? No way of knowing for sure without a close analysis of the code...
But yes... now that I think of it, the early tape versions is where I experienced the worst bugs. | User Comment Submitted by alwyz on 29 January 2019
On the copies i had, the deeper dungeons and original engines were exactly the same. I couldn't tell the difference. Perhaps there was an improvement from the tape engine to the disk engine, because it seemed to be a bit more stable on loading levels, etc. | User Comment Submitted by Neo-Rio on 28 January 2019
I’ve always wondered about backporting the deeper dungeons game engine to the original Gauntlet, as I believe that deeper dungeons fixed a lot of bugs in it. |
