I varied the brightness settings in Vice by a huge amount and can see it all the time.

I also don't see anything special here. I made the experience that some of those "optical illusions" don't work on all types of monitors and having the right brightness settings seems to be also important. At least I remember another C64 release where I couldn't see any illusion on my desktop while it was clearly visible on my laptop.

I think we need a better screenshot, even with my glasses on I don't see the illusion.
