My first version was written in BASIC for me and my sister because we didn't have a Mineswwep game for C64 that we liked. That was somewhere in 1997 od 1998. After that, it became sort of tradition for me to improve the game around every new year. At some point I decided that I wanted bigger playfield than 23*23 and I started to write completely assembly version. Although I knew it wasn't such a big deal, I was very proud at the time to have achieved more than 8 sprites on screen. This is still the version of minesweep for C64 that I personally like the most.
