I even had an Atari 800 XL before a C=64, but the 256 vs 16 colors (8 bit) or later 4096 instad of 256 (16 bit) was mostly boasted with commercially and due to the x(!) out of a palette(!) of y colors close to lying. I remember only very few cases when these extra colors were used advantegeously, e.g. Attack of the Mutant Camels.

Probably because of the common colourful rasterbars in the Atari 8-bit logos. I remember that the C64 boys hated the fact that the Atari had 256 colours, and the C64 only 16:
