Flickering through a copy of Kerrang! Magazine, I came across a photo of lead singer Axl Rose of rock band Guns NRoses. The image of this person standing in a sunny street, wearing large reflective shades, looking like some sort of bug-eyed creature grabbed my attention. I was also looking for an image that would work well on C64, so I could enter the X96 Graphics Competition. I also wanted to try something new, and the idea of creating an out of focus effect fuelled my motivation. I was also well aware that the Drazlace graphic editor allowed for the option to switch off interlaced pixels, while retaining interlaced colour. The plan was to have the out of focus backdrop flicker, and the main subject non flicker.
The list of objectives included:
Shades: They needed to look very reflective. If you look closely, theres a car, trees, roof tops, and the sun in those reflections.
Leather Cap: The metal rim of the peeked cap need to give an illusion of soft metal, and not nearly as hard as the shades. I think the results worked out well.
Backdrop Out of Focus: This proved such a challenge. It really was genuinely difficult. I got a buzz from the results.
Skin: The mouth, nose, face turned out well. All that brown to the left never really worked. I tried black, but that didnt work either. I was up a gum tree, and X96 was approaching fast. The solution was a colour darker than C64 could offer.
Oral Sex (anagram of Axl Rose) became the title, as it might pull people towards it, when they listed the floppy disk directory.
X96 Graphic Competition Results:
#1 Li2/Deekay - Deserved its position, as it looks pretty amazing.
#2 Insex/Cupid - Not really my thing. Although Im guessing its no copy.
#3 Leguan/Hi-Lite - A very impressive wired image.
#4 Oral Sex/WEC
#5 Headman/Angeldust
#6 Pinda/Celtic
Only 6 entries. #4 place was ok, although obviously wired images should not be allowed to enter graphic competitions. |
