@Waverider: It happens when you use zeropage addresses without labels. If you define all zeropage addresses like below, you can prevent that.

STAR_POINTER = $02 ; 16-bits
FRAME_COUNTER = $04 ; 16-bits
POINT_X = $06
POINT_Y = $07

Once, there was this star that kept moving down without wrapping around the screen. This rouge star started filling all the memory $4400 onward...
Turns out I was using a zeropage byte TWICE!
So it messed up the star pointer. :\
