I also tried inverting the RAM init pattern in vice, no difference, it just works. Try resetting your vice settings to defaults. It’s probably an uninitialised-memory problem then. It doesn’t work for me on C64Scene either (old VICE). I did a quick debug run before and there’s a JSR to $0810 - at a time when $0810 has just blank data. There’s some code up at $ef30 during that time too.
