to Weasel: Mind the pad :)
If you're downloading with a protocol of the x-modem line of Protocols, these have fixed Transferblock sizes that get padded at the last Block to fit 128 or 1024 Bytes. That's no bug in CCGMSX, that's how it is intended to work.
Some Terminals offer you the option to cut the excess CPMEOF $1a or $00 Bytes off after download, but not all Terminals.

Hey there guys, paladi and New Design...

As I couldn't stop thinking about all this I did more testing during the last few days...
And I now found the REAL reason for all this trouble (I caused here... Sorry for that in advance! ;-) )

The reason is NOT DirMaster (which I thought first as well at some point).
But that tool is working perfectly fine so far I tested it out.

I downloaded the files (Excess and latest G*P v1.02) from the boards using another tool from Style.

And that is CCGMSx v1.0.0 ! ;-)

It's surely a REALLY GREAT terminal program (way better than cgterm imho) but still
has some flaws in its current v1.0 release and sadly there hasn't been
any updates since then.

The reason:
-----------
CCGMSx added some "fill bytes" ("zzzzzzzz") at the very end of the downloaded files.

So, when unlynxing those additional bytes got added to the "last file" in the lynx-pack,
which was the hi-score file in this case. That way the file got larger than it used to
be in the original and when loaded by the game simply had overwritten valid code
at $0810 with those "zzzzzzzzzzz"-fill bytes, naturally causing the game to
crash afterwards of course... :-P ;-)

So to keep it short:
--------------------
- It was NOT a faulty version/release of Excess here
(at least not this time... ;-))) :-P ) and also not from G*P.

- It was a faulty download file caused by the routines of
CCGMSx v1.0.0 (current release version).

Will see if I can reach Elwix/Style to let him know about this
flaw in his terminal tool for him to be hopefully able to fix
it then.

Hope this cleared everything up now and no one is mad (at me)
too much anymore... ;-)

See ya' guys and KEEP TESTING GOOD also for all
future releases... :-D

Bye,
Weasel

Paladin: DirMaster seems to unlynx the files just fine here (running DirMaster 3.1.5). Strange. No problems at all it seems.

Thank you very much for your feedback. We take this very seriously.
Before the game was released, there were extensive tests by the team. These were successfully completed without any problems.
I wasn't involved in testing this game, but I've just tried it out.
Black Beard and I downloaded the Lynx file from the boards and unzipped it. No crashes in the game, neither with nor without a trainer.
We tried it on Real Hardware, Ultimate64 and in VICE emulator. No crashes so far.
We also checked the (hidden) file here on CSDb.
So please download and try it again. Fingers crossed. :)

I'm guessing you're using Dirmaster to decompress the .lnx files? If so, use V1541Commander V1.1 and the release will extract properly. Dirmaster corrupts the highscore file in some way which causes the issue you describe

Well, seems the Excess version is broken (again - as certain games before these days)...
When it loads the hi-score before first starting up, the game crashes (at the tape loader screen).

Dunno why quite some groups ain't able to _check_ their releases _before_ releasing/uploading them to the boards and/or csdb here, today... :-O

Same goes for the first G*P release of this by the way... Haven't checked the v1.02 edition yet. But we'll see... ;-)

Oh well... QUALITY RULED FIRST in the good old past though!! :-P
