In the game, the main character is not the diver but actually the mermaid, Myrtle, who is controlled by the player. Her goal isn’t to attack the diver but to rescue him after he gets trapped under a ship. So his life depends upon Myrtle’s adventure and problem-solving skills. As for Myrtle herself, unlike you described her, I think she’s quite charming! Being a sea creature, it makes sense for her to have a form that’s well-suited for underwater life.
