Production Info

This production was created for the real-time competition, with the theme announced at the beginning of the Forever 2025 event (on friday): Theme was "Deadly Meteor".

Concept and Storyline:

1. First Screen: A sinister-looking meteor flies across space while eerie music plays.

2. Cut to a Peaceful Scene: The screen transitions to peaceful dinosaurs representing the logos of the C64, ZX Spectrum, and Atari, with small animated legs moving against a PETSCII-rendered Earth. This scene features simple sprite animations (maximum 8 characters). Peaceful music plays, incorporating subtle references to platform music, such as the Atari self-test tune. A year counter begins at 1982 and steadily increases.

3. Back to the Meteor: The screen cuts back to the meteor, now accompanied by a variant of the sinister music.

4. Return to the Dinosaurs: The peaceful 8-bit dinosaurs remain, and the year counter continues to increment.

5. Meteor Returns Again: The scene cuts back to the meteor, with another variation of the ominous music.

6. The dinosaur scene reappears, the year counter progresses... 2023, 2024, 2025… ...2026!, 2027!, 2028! We see the future now... ;-)

7. Final Screen: The last scene just sinister music playing in the background. The text on the screen reads: "Not in this lifetime..." Under that Forever 2025 appears.

Development and Execution:

Due to time constraints, I was only able to complete the first screen before the deadline. I decided to release it as it was presented at the party.

The PETSCII animation of the meteor was created by my daughter. The starfield effect is generated programmatically.

The production took approximately six hours. During this time, I:

Set up a cross-platform development environment using Kick Assembler, Visual Studio Code, and VICE. It was a new experience for me.

Learned how to configure a Makefile. How to execute wls/2 java, compile the code and launch Vice emulator to test it (I didn't want to install another instance of Java for windows when I already had it in it's Ubuntu subsystem)

Figured out how to import assets and binary files.

This experience has prepared me for future projects. When will I create the next one? I don’t know yet—but working this way was an enjoyable and rewarding experience.
