It was basicly sampling the registers of the SID and crunching the resulting dump, the replayer didn't have to store sequences or instruments but just stream the values back to the SID ... We thought it was a quite cool and ultrafast trick :)

Quite interesting: The music routine is very fast, but it sounds not so good. The features are mentioned with a very commercially appealing text. Unfortunately, the emphasis is on the (only 11 rasterlines max) routine, not on the music. The routine doesn't look very flexible either. :) Deja vu.
