One of my first images ever made in XFLI.

The original image was mirrored and converted to a c64 palette using Paint Shop Pro. This method pays no mind to limitations nor dithering patterns. It's just a brute force nearest color matching method to get the major parts correct.

I had read about graphicians using a method in the 90's that required pictures in Deluxepaint on the Amiga and then two monitors next to each other - one with the Amiga original, the other one with a C64 editor and I was inspired.

What I quickly realized though was that it was dead easy to do larger chunks of dithering (backgrounds etc) but for detailed areas the XFLI-limitations forced me to rethink color choices. I obviously had to dither the whole thing since nearest color matching produces fairly ugly conversions.

I guess you could call the process manual converting. I don't have the code skills necessary to write any kind of converting tool (and it wouldn't be as theraputic to just press one button instead of setting each pixel manually). It's a process I've used a number of times in this format, and I find it to be quite interesting - it's a challenge to get the details as good as possible.

The end result is still one of my better attempts at a realistic C64-image and a very good way to showcase the possibilities of the XFLI-format.

Uploaded some workstages. Shift+L to load in the XFLI-editor. I will write more about the process later.
