strange that it doesn't on real c64

this is ALWAYS setting the upper part to multicolor, probably you are using an AR cart which sets the text color as $01, and the init doesn't care about setting it, so it fills the color ram with current color ($0e). with any color value 0-7 chars are displayed as hires. Try without AR. or fix the code

Vice-2.4 shows the upper text in multicolor. On real hardware it's in normal text.
