Commodore in this case should be a name and not a military rank. The の should be a は since の means. A good translation would be コモドールはすごい。 すごい is not directly awesome as such, more like great, terrific, high in skill and so on. But it is in this case better fitting imo. And the second word is one of the ways you can say commodore.
