Just for a side note, on my real C64 is fine. No bad RAM initialization.
Just to clarify, I was not relying (and/or hoping) that F800-FFFF would have been correctly initialized because I know that not all real machines setup the RAM at startup in the same way. I was simply convinced that it was an unused area at startup, because the first level loads data into that range. But I was wrong.

"I have serious doubts it could happen on real HW too"
It definetely will happen on some machines. You can never ever rely on RAM that wasnt initialized. And the init pattern that is default in current VICE was taken from a real C64 too. It's not a "goof" - the release is broken.

I can confirm the issue with title screen only if filling the startup RAM with 255 instead of 0 (inverted fill pattern in the RAM options in VICE). I have serious doubts it could happen on real HW too, no time to fire up my setup at the moment.
Since it's not a standard setup, I wouldn't consider it a goof. Though I could make a new release and fix it filling with zeroes the RAM from F800 to FFFF that I forgot to include in my savings because it seemed was unused.
Please note the even with corrupted title screen, all come back to normal after the first game over....

Running a VICE build from last night with "x64sc -default image.d64" shows the error to me. IMHO not too weird :)

Apart that weird goof which doesn't happen to me (even with vice defaults, you must have a dirty mem or inverted fill pattern to see the problem), this release features a proper tune for level 4 "Mayhem", while the other cracked versions seemed to reuse another level tune. The rip in HVSC always lacked it, now I've ripped the missing tune and integrated it for the next update. =)

RAM not properly initialized, fill with 0 before loading and it works.
