I have tried the 3 pulse loader on this, but I haven't found it to be any more reliable than the standard 4 pulse loader.

I interpreted the "nice try" remark to mean something like "good work!", rather than the more "correct" interpretation of something like "nice try (even though it failed in some respect)".

Richard: Not sure I understood that "Nice try"-remark. If you're comparing this to loaders typically used on commercial releases, I think you missed the entire point :) The point was to create an auto-booting Turbo Tape substitute where speed was a priority. You couldn't possibly reach these speeds with IRQ-loading involving music or even a loading screen.

I understand Richard's sentiment though. Tape loaders with music and picture are all part of the retro experience. And what are we doing playing with old computers and tape decks if not for the retro experience?
Getting those damn tapes to load as quick as possible without failing - that's what! Not everybody enjoyed the nostalgia of waiting forever only for the fastloader to fail, and then having to rewind and try again! :D

Besides, with shorter loading times, now you can cram even MORE games onto your school yard mix-tapes :)

Excellent work! While I know music/picture loaders were popular in the 80s, they really had their place there - so I don’t really understand Richard’s comment. Most people that I knew just wanted the game to load faster… it always felt weird to wait 2 mins before the game itself even started loading. I know some loaders were amazing - Sanxion and Delta for example, and the (Mastertronic?) Space Invaders loader that was usually better than the actual game.

Someone should do a comparison of all these new tape loaders - speed vs error resilience etc.

I think the main goal here was to have a no-frills loader find the sweet spot of fastest loading speed possible without sacrificing reliability. It loads so fast, there's almost no time for music or a picture!

Nice try, but I probably rarely use that program, mainly because I prefer doing tape loading the more "presentable" way with loading picture and music, either with Freeload or TapeTool 1.0.0.5 :) (Later versions of TapeTool uses RLE Compression, which doesn't support the additional Disk-PRG/Tape writing source code irqtape1.a)

Turbotape is dead! Long live Turbotape!

Although it's actually really hard to crown the fastest tape loader because of the disparity in tuning between datasettes, quality of tape used, and the lack of a way to therefore scientifically measure reliability vs speed in tape loaders.

Having said that, even at the slowest and most reliable speeds, Slushload beats both standard Turbotape and Gyrospeed on real hardware - and that's good enough a metric :)

The possibly fastest tape loader ever released is now updated. Please see readme.txt for changes since previous version as the command line interface is slightly changed.

This release also fixes a few stability problems from the virst release.
