Tape original of this? Hm.. hm.. maybe some magazine cover tape. But even that I doubt. the LOD (=TWR?) info could be just bullshit. GB64 doesn't mention any cover tape info and they usually have all this on their pages.

The Blaze version does look like an attempt to get a first release; the "dead" scrolltext after the wrap code with J. Gosden's credit that Altered State has is still present at $6600.

This version has a note at $6600 from Lord Of Darkness which mentions a tape original, so it's equally possible that someone tried to disguise and self publish/sell a version of Altered State - not something i'd expect to see in the late 1980s though?

Death Dealer might be a lame attempt to gain a first release

"Did this sort of thing happen often, and is it easy to do?"
The scene had it's share of this sort of trash, yes.

Ok, played all three versions.

Death dealer, despite using ripped gfx for the main sprite, is the most playable due to having larger bullets and a faster response time to the fire button. Also, in this version, crashing into a drone counts as a kill, whereas in the others it does not.

The game plays up to around level 21, where it increments the number of drones to be destroyed above 99, and gets stuck on a never ending level with the kill counter gfx turning to garbage. So yeah, rOuGh is correct, this is clearly a preview.

In fact, on perfect weapon, if you level skip too far the game just crashes :P

So, ripping off other people's work and making small modifications/changing sprites... Did this sort of thing happen often, and is it easy to do?

A 100% version would be nice.

Yes, the planets are from Mega-Apocalypse, as well as the hero sprite is from Nebulus. The programmers seem to be British, so this is probably a Compunet release. Also that big font looks familiar. By SIT (Stephen Thompson)?

also, all three versions of that game seem to be previews

Ah, that'll be Jeff Gosden then, the guy who also created a preview for a game called Footman... http://pampi.homelinux.com/games/commodore_64/images-screenshot..

Thanks for the history lesson Jason! :)

There seem to be at least three versions of this game; Altered State (which is a preview), Perfect Weapon and this one.

Altered State has a (c) 1988 J. Gosden (disabled scrolltext, have a look around $6600 onwards) and Perfect Weapon says programming by J. Gosde (that's how it's spelt in the scroller), graphics by I. Dury and music by Matt Gray even though it's actually Marcel Donne's work, taken from Scorpion.

Death Dealer appears to be either one of the other two with replaced sprites (the planets are from Mega Apocalypse i think?) rather than an original title.

Does anyone know who actually coded this game? It looks more like a scene-related release with the huge charset for the scroller/score and so on than your typical freeware release.
