No.. it was meant as a joke, since I was such an grumpy old man towards Cresh the other day. Pay no attention to my comment...

Sledge, I can make some version with links to pic, but why? Are you trying to browse through something that has limited memory?

User Comment

*meaningless comment removed*

Nope. Traditiaonally, the result of public voting is being set in CSDB results. As was with other compos organised at c64.sk (having jury).

User Comment
Submitted by enthusi on 21 August 2012
Will the results here be updated to the final jury-judgement? :-)

User Comment
Submitted by CreaMD on 21 August 2012
Hedning, Dunno.. it somehow didn't get into the voting. But, I don't remember fkng up anything... I'll move it to outside compo entries.

User Comment

But. But. What about Ra-mbo First Flood part II?

At last the waiting is over! Thanks for a solid finale and a professional execution. But the cliff hanger.. Don't do it again =) Now I can haz peace in my mind! Thanks.

User Comment
Submitted by CreaMD on 27 February 2012
As far as creamonic music compo is concernedm, you are warmly invited to join the Forever party music compo this March (16-18). I love to have cool and creative musicians enriching the audial impact on the audience and it also increases the value of the competition itself. Dane and Linus at Forever, claiming the highest places in compo? What else a humble organiser can dream of? Except of maybe kicking their butt (by winning the compo with his own entry ;-). The compo is anonymous of course so it would be fair win. Archmage, I wouldn't mind having you in graphic compo either. ;-)

User Comment
Submitted by Archmage on 27 February 2012
Is it too late to compete?

User Comment
Submitted by Dane on 27 February 2012
I submit to the wisdom of Uncle Linus. A SID compo this summer would yield results in ...2015?

User Comment
Submitted by Linus on 27 February 2012
:)

Dear Creamd, you can *easily* regain lost ground by organising another Sidcompo(tm).

Love,

Maybe I should rename my entry to Rambo 2012 then? I have epic expectations from the infamous jury commentary by now.

User Comment

Ahem. I actually fled into the scene dimension from the diaper world. My daughter was born in 2009, and you could all check out when I was reborn as a scener.

User Comment
Submitted by Conrad on 17 November 2011
It's a wonderful feeling when your girl gives birth to your child... the only disadvantage is that it kills your scene activity by a huge chunk. Just wait a bit longer, I'm sure the results will be revealed eventually.

Here's my prediction:

1. Deekay
2. Dane
3. ?

User Comment
Submitted by CreaMD on 8 October 2011
Results 11-51 released. Stay tuned for grand finale ;-)

User Comment
Submitted by CreaMD on 6 October 2011
there is a logic in it. If I revealed 51 results at once... it would be quite messy.. but well I've realised I could have done it more effective way.. I need to recode my voting script to display the pics ordered ... (actually it does that already, but it doesn't feature the "tease" function) gotta recode it ;-)

User Comment
Submitted by Mr. SID on 6 October 2011
What a tease!

User Comment
Submitted by CreaMD on 6 October 2011
places 30-51... stay tuned ;-)

User Comment

I have everything for about week or more.. just procrastinating.. anyway the first 11 places (from the bottom) revealed.

Mac OS X.

User Comment

What operating system is it? Maybe it depends on that.

User Comment
Submitted by MagerValp on 5 September 2011
It's smooth in Firefox for me:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/839742/rambo.png

User Comment
Submitted by CreaMD on 5 September 2011
I'm using Firefox (6) as my primary browser and found the pics quite sharp (non-antialiased). In Chrome it looks totally decent. Is the pic antialiasing in FF enabled on default? Should I use some moz-CSS to enable it?

roman

User Comment
Submitted by MagerValp on 5 September 2011
Safari and Firefox 3+ also does a smooth resize. I haven't used Internet Explorer for ages, and I would assume recent versions do a smooth resize as well. Older IE versions can be coaxed with CSS: img { -ms-interpolation-mode : bicubic; }.

User Comment
Submitted by CreaMD on 5 September 2011
size/3 browser resize was the most convenient solution for the "zoom" feature. If I had 2 sizes for pics I would have to either use some thickbox, lightbox plugin, or make my own simplyfied one. Btw I wonder why there isn't some kind of antialiasing for html-resized pics in browsers nowadays.. I don't think that would be too computer-power-hungry anyway. Or would it be?

just checked.. Chrome does that.. cool.

User Comment
Submitted by Oswald on 5 September 2011
oh, the browser resize explains the missing antialiasing (or how should I call it) on the thumbs. :/

User Comment
Submitted by CreaMD on 5 September 2011
ahem.. wopid me... september of course.

User Comment
Submitted by Conrad on 5 September 2011
Submitted my votes yesterday... but hell, 3 months deadline? I will have forgetten what I voted by then. :)

User Comment
Submitted by CreaMD on 5 September 2011
Deekay, I suppose he made his own screenshots to have all pics in the same size with a border around. Could you please make your screens like that? I will replace it asap.

Oswald, you mean the fact that they are resized by browser?

User Comment
Submitted by Oswald on 5 September 2011
cool votng sys indeed, but the thumbnails do suck badly.

User Comment
Submitted by DeeKay on 4 September 2011
Okay, voted! ;-) Some tough choices there... Great voting system though, IMHO that method of voting should go RIGHT into effing Partymeister!....

One thing though: i have no idea why Veto chose this weird palette for my NUFLI pic, but could you (both) please change it to the proper pepto palette and new VIC colors? thx!

User Comment
Submitted by CreaMD on 4 September 2011
Participants can vote too, no vote for own pic.

User Comment
Submitted by spider-j on 4 September 2011
are participants allowed to vote aswell (excluding own pic of course)? (haven't followed a c64.sk compo before - so i don't know)

User Comment
Submitted by CreaMD on 4 September 2011
Rambo Revisited - Voting phase (it will last at least a week, or until there is enough votesheets). As there is quite a lot of entries, I have added the possibility to remove unwanted entries, so you have it easier to order your favorites:

http://www.c64.sk/vote.php

p.s.: enough votesheets = (probably something between 50-100 could be okay for reference)

User Comment

Romppainen: vicpack V0.10 can do bitmap (hires, FLI or MC) with an extra hires spritelayer - AND it also saves executables!... Try that!

User Comment
Submitted by hedning on 28 August 2011
CreaMD: Just check that I did not forgot any entries. There is room on the last floppy for more. They are also unsorted. I exomized all of the unpacked entries to fit them.

But since it is in now, I suppose we'll see how it does.

User Comment

Still about 15 minutes to deadline here.

User Comment

0:06 here, did it end or is there time zone differences?

User Comment
Submitted by CreaMD on 27 August 2011
Sixx ;-)))))))

Not over yet. 2,5 hours to go. ;-)

And actually there will be voting phase, and I need to make some "easy for customer" voting thing. Probably launched on monday. And then about week max two of voting.

RAMBO font: Aachen Bold from Letraset!

User Comment
Submitted by CreaMD on 27 August 2011
Cleaned the "outside compo" a bit and added the entries to the compo that seemed worthy. It seems some people unintentionally did not edit the "c64 graphics" in the compo category in some of them. In some cases I left the pics in outside compo, when I didn't find them worthy enough. I haven't moved anything to outse myself though. (except of the "red hot flea dupe" dupe if I remember right.

47 entries.. oh fuck.. now I need to make a decent voting system..

User Comment
Submitted by hedning on 27 August 2011
Romppainen: Have you tried ConGo? You can save executables there. Even hires. ConGo V5 B0.98

User Comment
Submitted by Romppainen on 27 August 2011
Hedning: I don't know any coders personally so unfortunately that option is pretty much out of question. I guess I'll get it eventually sorted some day when I have enough time to start learning all those tools (my original thought was to stay away from all the advanced graphic modes until I get a proper hold of How The Stuff Works) or to fix it to work in plain hires mode (it is probably doable, I used those sprite layers to get around certain conflicts just because of time getting short), it will just miss the deadline and needs to get released as standalone product when the time comes. Not a big deal, it wasn't THAT awesome anyway.

User Comment
Submitted by hedning on 27 August 2011
Romppainen: Send it to a coder that can help you out. It sucks if you worked for a while and just have to throw it away. :(

User Comment
Submitted by Romppainen on 27 August 2011
Damn, I had some spare time in my hands so I prepared another compo entry during last few days but found out that apparently Timanthes can't spit out proper executable out of hires picture with sprite layers, as a desperate attempt I tried to convert it to NUFLI from .png using Mufflon but it came out with some errors and I can't make head or tail of the editor to fix 'em so I guess I'm out...

User Comment
Submitted by Ed on 26 August 2011
Groepaz, somehow you nailed it with that image example.

The whole competition looks like minced meat. I've pretty much voted 1 for most of the pieces with a few exceptions.

Algorithm, the compo lasts until Saturday 23:55. I'm quite sure there is still enough time for some more productions to come. And apart from the fact that this is not exactly the direction I expected, the "buzz" is more than satysfying. Nowadays everyone can be "rambo" with the right tools. My respect to everyone who tried harder.

User Comment
Submitted by CreaMD on 24 August 2011
Booker.. taking things out of context are we?

User Comment
Submitted by algorithm on 24 August 2011
This is getting way out of hand. Most of the releases are wired (mine included - although i did demonstrate custom AFLI dither method) or just botch jobs or even more ridiculous, black screen or tiny blob. Personally, the winner of this competition would be STE who re-handcrafted the rambo picture entirely without adding a face etc

Quoting CreamD
I can also ditch this compo now.

OMG dude, wtf, RambofacepalmUltimate :)

User Comment
Submitted by CreaMD on 24 August 2011
Dane, there is nothing better than having public embarrassment completely under own direction.

Carrion. Sebaloz "wasted" his opportunity, so you can't count him into the Joe's exclusive list. ;-) Actually I recalled 1k entry from Sebaloz from some of the Forever parties, so I understand he has sense for this kind of humor and I can't blame him for that. Just I would appreciate something in his (sort of) "stream-of-consciousness" style much more.

p.s.: word "embarrassment" has especially stupid spelling.

User Comment

If I can free up some more time before Saturday evening I'll probably end up embarassing myself yet again. :)

Carrion: I'm perfectly entitled my public opinion, NO? And I like that people are having fun. I'm just not for it with the poor results it imply. And as for your judging, we have seen your poor votes on some of the finest there are in this scene, it speaks for itself.
And thanks for adding some names onto the list.

User Comment

I have never seen so much crap at once such as this one time. Part from my gfx-bomb tar in '07. Fortunately they where experiments.

Good luck with the compo thought, it seems you are in a great joy and that is the important thing I guess, regardless my own taste. Ok, some are quite funny, I admit, but the level of execution is far below acceptable and probably far reaching the point of the discurse in the beginning.

I'm glad several graphic artist with selfpreservation didn't join in just yet:
Dane, Hein, Jailbird, Archmage, Grass, Lars, Leon, Clone, Mermaid, Almighty God, AMN, Sander, Veto, Yazoo, Oys, Alias Medron, Sledge, FatFrost, Louie, Helm and myself etc.

Respect!

i dont think anyone is frustrated. i love taking part, but i love it even more seeing this compo going bonkers =)

User Comment
Submitted by CreaMD on 22 August 2011
CSDB voting doesn't matter in this compo. There will be "order from best to worst" voting as usual in C64.sk compos. And probably also some jury results. As far as "frustrated" graphicians are concerned, this compo is extension from the debate, it proves some points and it shows the nature of scene, how people think. How easily/hardly they can get satisfied with what they do (depending on their creative history and reputation at stake). The buzz, this compo creates is interesting. I wish I had proficiency of Twoflower or Mermaid (and also a bit of patience) to write a good analysis of what is happening right now ;-))

just what i ment, indeed. the most succesful troll i have seen for a while :o)

The picture that spawned the compo was TF's pic. I promised (in a weak moment in PM to STE'86 ;-) to make the compo even before the STE'86 pic was finished and uploaded. Of course if it wasn't of STE'86 who sent me PM right after my comment under TF's pics (around 8. august), there wouldn't be a compo.

"one obvious fake, stolen entry"
for a second i thought you mean the picture that spawned the entire compo =P

Frantic: I only removed one obvious fake, stolen entry at the beginning. The rest is decided by people who contribute. Some of them submit as outside-compo.

Just a suggestion to think about: Personally I don't really see any particular reason to disqualify any entries from the compo. Why not simply let the voters decide what suxx and what does not? Would be easiest, and with no particular drawbacks, the way I see it. :) Anyway, you're the organizer so it is of course up to you!

Btw. this compo reminds me of C64.sk Cover Compo #1 a bit. I never said the tunes should be covers of C64 tunes, or chiptunes, but I've got a feeling that some people thought, they should be. In this compo, some entries have "ocean logo" . I didn't write anywhere in the rules that the pic should have the ocean logo, or any text. It's about theme itself, not the attempt on making better rambo title pic. I don't mind if you took that route though. ;-) Just pointing out.

I love you everybody. This is exactly the way how I imagined the compo will run. Combination of everything that makes this scene famous. ;-) There is still a huge space for some quality stuff, but so far it is quite interesting, also with the stuff released outside the compo.. Keep 'em coming. Gotta check do it yourself thingy, I look forward for some good laughs ;-)

I've been thinking, and I vote 10 for skyffel's banned and erased rambo-entry. It's actually a funny and smart reply on Twoflower's idea, the idea that cleared the path for this compo. ;)

Some cool ideas there. Most of them doesn't earn you much points in general c64 gfx department, but depending on production, some of them might work.

<quote> "Ramboskyffel" not accepted into the compo. This is not a rip-off or shit compo. It's compo for creative people.</quote>

I think this kind of stupidity is creative and funny. :)

Anything goes? Maybe a cubic version (some kind of cubes), a dadaist picture (a rainforest landscape, and a title saying: 'rambo camuflaged on the picture', one pixel on brown a screen and a title for this 'rambo in the desert viewed from a satellite' are all creative. :)

Hedning: I have overlayed "skyffel-entry" in gfx editor out of curiosity. It was 100% identical. TF's handmade copy wasn't, which doesn't matter anyway. I would have removed TF pic if I organised compo where it was submitted (unless given good reason by it's author to keep it).

As org. I decide what stays and what come, and I give reasons. As org. I take the risk. With fake entry staying it compo I might have killed motivations for some. With removing it, I might have killed motivation for others (E.g. Sixx speaking about wanting to contribute (with quite original entry I must admit).. Seriously don't care about such reactions. I was talking about lot of things that I will do and I didn't too. Talking is not doing)

I'm sure I did the right thing. I want to have good compo with good things coming. This was never meant to be fake compo or silly compo, or wired pics compo. It's not primarily (only) about improving of the original (as STE'86 did with grace), but revisiting the theme from different angles. I think I have explained it quite well in the rules.

hedning has a strong point there. to me danes and twoflowers picture have exactly the same "value" in terms of creativity or even "art".

User Comment
Submitted by hedning on 19 August 2011
Actually it was pretty fun with the previously erased "skyffel-entry" copying STE'86, because, if I understand it correctly, it was made in the same fashion as twoflower made his. And twoflower started all this. But I am not sure how to decide it was just copied or if it was copied by hand. Same goes for Twoflower's pic.

Hah. This discussion makes me wanna try out Rambo myself. We'll see if I can get the time.

Street Tuff: I don't want to sound patronizing, because I'm not exactly the person who can throw stones. I did some tunes for compos I can't be proud of and it hurts my ego even more, when people give positive feedback to them (like the last one), but I think that good way how to pay respect would be to work hard to avoid the urge to add "don't take it serious" to anything one releases... (really I just wanted to point this out now, while it's fresh, I mean it positively)

User Comment
Submitted by CreaMD on 19 August 2011
Deekay, don't keep it for yourself.

First I'm sure you take it seriously and I don't think you are going to release something that doesn't match your high standard and that you won't stand behind.

Second, anything goes. (except of obvious theft of STE'86 pic repacked and uploaded as new entry, that I had removed earlier.. that was neither funny, nor acceptable by scene standards.. if there are any).

User Comment

@creamd you got me there. i'm no pixel artist. i rather spend my time on coding weird routines in assembler. but respect to anyone who has the patience for pixel-art!

User Comment
Submitted by DeeKay on 19 August 2011
I have two entries coming, one of them handpixel work (improved original) but the other one of them is converted (though manually postprocessed and hand-layouted to match the original pic). If that is not eligible, I might as well stop the work on it right now, as there's *quite* a bit of that necessary...

User Comment
Submitted by CreaMD on 19 August 2011
I can understand it now, but still, you could spend more hours on finalizing. But then.. that would turn you into pixel artist, and they are... kinda weird wasting hours over details. I wish I had the patience...

Gropeaz. And that's the spirit of making art. Trying it your way, staying behind it. And that's why I want to read about the "process of making it". Because it will be probably the most enjoyable thing about that release... I mean.. something like this. I took this pic... cropped it this way, preprocessed with this color palette, loaded into that convertor, saved... ...and I'm proud about it. It was hell!!!... (??! ;-) ... but what if there will be somehting like "fixed this or that" .. saved... whoa.. +1 point for effort. :-)))

User Comment
Submitted by CreaMD on 19 August 2011
That's why I said I'm not going to remove it myself just asked to Street Tuff elaborate on the process used in making of the pic.

Yes, and the rules used word reference at least 2 times too. It doesn't say no wiring, as well as it doesn't say that I will be nice and polite to people taking this route, even when they are admitting it. This compo doesn't have prizes. The prize for creative effort goes from inside (satisfaction) and outside (acceptation, fame.. etc.). How much of that can you get for conversion. So there I go.. giving it for free... unacceptance.. instant zero love.. ;)

@creamd gotta second groepaz in this case. i would say that everyone will submit a wired picture(hell, even i did for the first time). im fine with that cause like gpz said (and you stated):"anything goes". sure it's not of the best quality. but that will be judged later by the voters

User Comment

Wired Blood part II - Well, I didn't ask for wired pics. I thought everyone who will participate in the compo will understand that the proces of making of their thing is putting together things and elements that are processed through eyes, hands etc. Straight taking of an image and running it through converter wasn't asked for anywhere in the compo rules.

Anyway, when we are at it. Please provide the original crop of the pic, and describe the process of making of this one (software used, preprocess, postprocess, if any). Put it into the production note in the csdb entry. That will at least give the viewer hint of how much work was invested to your product. And while writing it, if you still be proud about it, then feel free to keep it in the compo. If not, remove it. I'm not going to remove it myself.

historically i don't "do" competitions and am more than willing for this to remain the case. so please enter what you will and don't let it be judged against mine

Traditionally, c64.sk compos have short time-span, to prevent hacking around and doing nothing. Usually any gfx or music on C64 can be made in time measurable in hours (or tens of hours). There is really no need to have compos lasting months, they are losing the drive. And also.. this saves time for other compos to be organised.. ;-) year has only about 52 weeks.

And hey, thanx for support everybody.

Sixx.. did you see the contribution? If yes, do you really think I shoudln't have removed it? And if yes, and you still think it was valid entry, then feel free to bitch about it. I organise this compo and I can recongise idiotic entries from serious attepmts (Ramboskyffel was 100% identical to STE'86 pic repacked). I assure you that I would consider ascii intepretation from you as serious attempt. And if anyone is against me doing it this way. I can also ditch this compo now. I don't have problem with that. 2-4 weeks saved. This compo isn't fake.

PM me, if you have further questions.

Idea and concept: This compo is inspired by Rambo. A Chronicle Of.. (Rambo. A Chronicle Of..) image released at LCP party (5-7 August 2011). It is almost pixel exact copy of the original Rambo First Blood - Part II - title pic. It was fairly and tediously repixelled by Twoflower to stir debate around value of pixel-craft, manual pixelling, originality etc. Read more in the comments and trivia under the pic.

Rules: Original image (title pic of Rambo First Blood - Part II) is your inspiration and reference. You go anywhere from that. You can try improve it(like STE’86 did here Don't Push It). You can redraw it using different technique or use other graphics mode. Even doublescreen! (pun inteded ;-) You can just take something (e.g. some detail) out of it an make it into whole new masterpiece. You can extend it, simplify, use other versions (like the one from ZX Spectrum: http://zx.maros.pri.ee/zxscreen/border/0/palette/pulsar/mode/mi..), or even original poster as reference...I’m sure you can come up with your own ideas. Anything goes.

Pictures should be executable C64 .PRG files. They will be released on fly (as they are submitted). Voting will be perfomed online while the compo lasts (and about week-two after the deadline). In short, it will be working exactly like previous C64.sk compos.

Sumbit your entries to: creamd@c64.sk or/and add them directly to CSDB and this compo page.
