It's been a busy month so you'll have to wait a little longer for the Official Mix, but let's finally unveil the winner. After long and careful consideration the honourable jury (that's MONO JUNK and MESAK if you forgot) has reached an indisputable vertict and it is:

NEUPOLAR by LAURIKKA!

Congratulations!

Well done! Who are you? Where did you come from, where did you go? Please keep up the amazing work and release more techno! (And the same for everyone else in the compo)

THANKS EVERYONE! I am overwhelmed by the number and quality of entries. Clearly there was a lot of pent-up techno power hiding inside the scene. Recordings are in process and soon the judges will be flooded with this awesomeness ;-).

Hmm! There is so much that you could do with separate tracks, like a hint of distortion on the bassline, sidechain compression, massive cowbell reverb... But I would still like to say that it's... Allowed! If you feel like your track needs it, nothing is explicitly forbidden. I'm sure the authenticity-craving audience here will let you know if you went "too far" ;-).

IF you want to go crazy and the risk going too far sounds more like an opportunity to you, I would encourage you to go crazy with live C64 tweaking rather than with studio post-processing.

And remember that you have to submit your C64 compatible file too, and you will get a better score and improve your legendary stats if you do your sidechains and distortions and phasers and reverbs on the C64. And hopefully, in the future, the pandemic will pass and there will be parties where computer DJs will play your track straight from the machine to massive crowds of raving sceners.

So, just one slight rule addition: Be honest and write a description about what you have tweaked live or edited!

At what level is the mp3 allowed to be processed? Can I e.g. export the sid-channels separately and process them one by one etc. or am I limited only to ”master” the whole track that is exported from the sid?

Hey musicians!

You are about to enter the TECHNO COMPO 2021!

The theme is old-school underground techno. Sometimes repetitive, but always evolving. The kind that you would ordinarily do with a simplistic drum machine and no more than a handful of synthesizers. Obviously the SID and C64 are too powerful in comparison, but let's try to constrain ourselves for once and concentrate on pulsating percussive arrangements with melodic elements perfected into their bare essence!

Deadline: 31 July 2021
Minimum length: 2 bars. Maximum length: 22 minutes.
Single executable, single SID chip, no other limitations!
As seems to be the norm: Max 2 entries per contestant.

You are expected to provide an executable to keep things cleanly as "C64 music". BUT let's also do something different than usual:
You are encouraged to also provide your perfect recording as a sound file, meaning that you can tweak your filters and anything in your track live!

On top of that, even some editing and effects are *allowed*. In fact, anything goes as long as it feels like it's essential to your track, but you will obviously get a better csdb score and comments (leaving a permanent mark on your legacy) if you keep your music C64 compatible and your executable enjoyable too.

CSDB prrrobably doesn't want to host the sound files (I guess -- we're talking about bigger files than usual C64 productions), so please link
somewhere outside. (dropbox, google drive, soundcloud, youtube...)

If you just want to make a regular prg/sid as always, and don't provide a recording, then one will be made for you. I will do my best to follow any instructions if you provide them, and of course try to find the best SID individual for your track.

Every entry is already declared AWESOME in advance, but there can be only one WINNER that will be decided by extremely appropriate celebrity judges:

MONO JUNK (DUM RECORDS) and MESAK (MR VELCRO FASTENER)!

These guys are legitimate legends with solid non-compromising discographies stretching all the way from the 90s into the future!

*Naturally* I will also try to make a mix of the entries with DS/DJ-2000, if they are compatible and sound good directly from the machine... Non-compatible entries could be played in executable form or in digital sound form using your recording. Or something. We'll see what you come up with!
