"Oh really, stop being such a disturbed drama queen! :D The docs file is just some text, like the trivia or production notes."
yeah, and if its so irrelevant, why is it even here, and why did you bother to point out that fact even by changing the release title? first its important who uploaded something 2h before someone else, and then it is irrelevant wether that release contained a doc file, eh? the first release didnt, this entry is about the firstrelease and not something you came up with after you noticed your firstrelease is incomplete and needs improvement. create a new entry, or someone else will do it. @Lemming: groepaz already answered that question, "no, the new rules [..] do not apply to old cracks".

@Ksubi: this entry is about the crack and not about the game, so it is just normal that people here discuss things like intro, docs and first-release... i'm quite sure this won't "overshadow" discussions about the game elsewhere.

i also think that adding a docs file to the disk is not a new release when the main binary wasn't changed.

...and as usual, all the drama over shadows the fact that this is a neat little game :) Kudos to TMR, Odie and Smila for a superb game.

Ok so should there or should there not be two entries for ESI Gunship with added dox? :)

Oh really, stop being such a disturbed drama queen! :D The docs file is just some text, like the trivia or production notes. I uploaded all of this in the same day here in Australia, so as far as I see it, it should just stay in the same entry.

"I think adding a docs file using the same text that was posted in this very thread and then deleted after the fact is a bit over the top as far as creating an entire new entry."
its irrelevant what is inside that doc file really. added docfiles are considered a relevant improvement, obviously relevant enough to point it out in the filename and even by changing the release title. "Edge Grinder +2D" was not released on the 2nd, it was released a day after that. hence new entry.

I think adding a docs file using the same text that was posted in this very thread and then deleted after the fact is a bit over the top as far as creating an entire new entry. The same could be said about adding "Trivia" or "Comments" that improve the release too. My vote for the rule is when the release itself (not outside code) is improved.

you clearly updated your release, you even bothered to brag about it by updating the filename. its not something minor as ian already pointed out.

and no, the new rules (which you have approved btw) do not apply to old cracks.

so, new entry. and ofcourse, the rules (which you approved) apply to the new entry as well. which may or may not result in the new entry beeing accepted, depending on where else the new release is available for download.

Those other sites have nothing to do with CSDb rules. Regarding the docs file. Should I create an entry just for the docs file by itself? As the game remains unchanged. We just added something we forgot to attach to the original release. Will you also create new entries also for these:

Walkerz +2HFD
Gunship
Pasteman Pat +
Balloon Raid +3
Bouncing Heads +6F

"Sorry for splitting the hair in 4, but adding dox IS an improvement to the release, and even if added few hours later, this doesn't allow updating the entry. An entry can be silently updated within the 48h limit if there's a typo in the filename or scroller for example, not when the release is improved. Rules are rules, for everyone."
indeed. please make a new entry. (and dont forget to upload the new version to all these release sites too)

The best solution IMHO would be to have quite a few elite telnet:able boards up and running, and that only these would be valid for a release to be counted. All odd ftp-sites are ad hoc half-institutions (TDD most specifically), but not the real deal. However, until these boards appear and a new consensus is agreed upon, the rules are clearly to be read in The List.

Other than that I agree with that the cracks should only available for leeching on these boards in order not to kill off scene crowdfunding (in this case, however, Heavy Stylus and TMR seems to have said OK, and then the case is obviously much different).

I develop the thoughts of a boardscene parallel to a more open forum-scene in my comments in Taper's chapter Sceners Poll (latest issue of Attitude).

I accept the race as it is, I did it long ago, but I also appreciate discussions, and think discussions is good for the scene. I second Sixx: "A great game and a lively scene.. What's not to like."
User Comment
Submitted by Slator on 3 August 2011
I am not rude and I am calm. I just cannot stand the fact that you want to bend the rules because you lost the race this time. so that is the scene, next time you win maybe, or maybe not. that is called competition, and at some point you have to face the facts wheter you like them or not. I am always fair to everyone so jump off the drama now and do some other release then now please.

I started the discussion because it sounded like "we won already from the beginning" - when it all actually was about Antidote, and we both hammered that wall yesterday. You got in. We lift our hats, and just pointed out that our release also was put on three other sites, be it relevant or not.

To second on what Slator said - the rules for the first release scene are fine as they are. They were discussed with Taper/Triad and updated slightly to incorporate CSDb as one of the sites (as it was only ftps and then before that, only bbs).

we all have to follow the same rules. if you don't like them, and believe that making it available to download for everyone makes it a decent release, then off you go and open up a p2p-c64 scene. maybe someone jumps in, maybe not. I don't know how you could think that I didn't upload it to csdb because I am too dumb or something. I had the game done ages before you had and just waited on releasing it on antidote first, which was not possible as it was down, hammering the reconnect button for hours did it then. so, it worked. and yes our version is longer, as we used a huge intro and a big trainermenue, which this game deserves, and still I left out the retro replay rom and kernal....

I do like the rule here on csdb: "Note that uploading alone doesn't count, the release must be accepted by the particular site and be moved out of incoming for everyone to download." Maybe we could see a change in the VN rules regarding this? I think it's a good one. The point here is: It's not "out" until people actually is able do DL it.

Submitted by Jazzcat on 3 August 2011
Sure. 2.5 hours after us. My point here is clearly obeying the rules and who is awarded the right as "first release".

Anyway, unlike the Avatar/G*P debate with their The Great War game, this is a real representation of the time rule.

Ian: the main entry is the same, it is only adding the docs file.

"The release on TDD came before everything else." True. But there is a problem there, still, and I know it does not count, but I think it is interesting: the UL to TDD was not available for people to DL. Our release on csdb was the first release people actually could get their hands on.

EDIT: And you need to update the rules on your homepage, stating both Banana Republic and Gangstas Paradise as legit. It's a little confusing.

hedning: well, for the purpose of 'The List' and the boards, this rule is not just VN it is something that has lasted for over 15 years (these 'list rules' are an institution in themselves), the only sad thing is that VN is the last remaining magazine that has a chart to cover it. So, quite an important fact. Something else is that who was truely first? The release on TDD came before everything else...

In my opinion, of course, this is the best example of how a crack can actually work as promotion for a game.
The gameplay is superb, the hookability is insane and the graphics are brilliant. Must be the coolest looking rotating enemy ships I've seen on the C64. :)
I'm a sucker for insane shoot'em ups and this one's sure gonna be a party favorite over here! Didn't take me more than half an hour with this release and I just had to order the cartridge-original.
And this is the fourth game I've bought since 1992 :).

Oh yeah back to the release itself;.. I think it's perfect, but that's nothing unusual as it's Onslaught. ;)

For VN, yes. :) Congrat to that.

I just thought it would be nice to gain the public trust by telling everyone that it was not a obvious case from the beginning. You were on TDD first, we were on csdb first, and there was a fight entering Antidote for quite a while, which you finally succeded with.

For the public GP was first on csdb, Banana, Gangsta and Arnold. Maybe some sceners are happy with that. :)

Now I have to push some pixels for LCP. Too bad you could not be there, Jazzcat. :/

Jazzcat. I believe your release was on TDD, and nowhere else when you stated "It is also on the majority of counted boards (Antidote also)", when our release was available on csdb, Arnold, Banana and Gangsta. Antidote was offline/crashing, and ONS uploaded there after the release on csdb, and after you mention Antidote in this very thread, not 2.5h before anyone else.

And yes: we couldn't get to Antidote because it was offline at first, but I do believe we were first everywhere except TDD at first, then Antidote came back online, and you were able to upload there too right before us, but at that time our release was already available at all the sites mentioned above.

As this is missing the docs, here is the blurb from our website explaining what the game is about (following complaints that 'it's too easy, too short, too 16KB, blah')

*SNIP*

The +2D version now has an abridged version of the docs ;)

LaStyle: erm. NO. It was no where except TDD for 2.5 hours. It was on Antidote. 2/3 us. 1/3 GP. Sorry that it annoys you but these are the facts.

Oh, check this screen too:
http://www.atlantis-prophecy.org/doppelt.jpg

Clearly shows who was first and who was on the majority of counted boards.

Since we were on the other Sites earlier and couldnt connect to Antidote (as you couldnt aswell) its up to the Public to judge.

ed. it was me who informed Taper on his BBS beeing offline, and Slator just called 2 secs before Taper send the msg that the BBS is back online.
And as People were concering my releases beeing to huge, i have also to add that my Release is 20 Blocks (4878 Bytes) shorter than Yours.

The game is not supposed to be hard - the idea is that it is to be played as a competitive Caravan style shooter, where you try to get the highest score possible. TMR holds the record of over 150,000 at the mo ;)

Hi there - Jazzcat, as far as I'm concerned you can make it available here for DL. As soon as the official Cosine release comes out (with loading screen on the D64, etc) then I was going to make it freely downloadable anyway - that was always the plan. In fact... I might even link to this crack myself so people can try it out before buying.

TMR mentioned to me something about a crack being imminent, so it's not like this is a surprise ;)

This won't effect cart sales at all - people who want to support TMR, etc. or who want a physical release will still buy it, so I don't have an issue with this at all. 'tis the way of the scene ;)

TDD, Antidote and CSDb are the only counted ones.

Groepaz: well, we are not obeying the CSDb rules here. This is 'The List' which the mag uses CSDb as one of the sites for.

This is the real first release. Uploaded onto The Digital Dungeon several hours before the G*P release. It is also on the majority of counted boards (Antidote also). Enjoy!

Edit: also the reason we left it from here and put it on TDD, Antidote only is so it would not affect the commercial aspect of the game too much (like what we did with Sheepoid, Hyper, Knight n Grail etc). CSDb is only secondary and we were 2.5 hours earlier everywhere else. :D
