Awesome picture Carl!

Jailbird: you really should have written Malmoe instead of Stockholm for some credability ;)

Woa, a brilliant picture and an interestingly funny conversation down there. Did you notice the similarities between Joodas and Joe lately? ;)

When I went to Stockholm last year to meet up with Joe, 7 months before X2010 in order to talk about the scene and re-learn some pixles basics and to just let him inspire me... he showed me all the demos from the last 20 years that were worth mentioning and we had an absolutely super time there. Of the many files he opened up and showed to me I would say about 10-15 of them were in a folder called Clone... At that time I thought it were a ref to the pictures in the folder, but now I remember this image at an earlier stage. At the time I saw this image at his screen it were more a rip of in photoshop layers, I think the head were some boris valeio image and he had started to shatter it all out but it were wery poor at that time... he had a hand in there but not those cool lights and bizzzz bizzzz and all... and there were only a solid colored background. Joe, seriously, I asked you about this image and you told me you were working on that. Why do you keep denying these things to the scene... ? I just can not understand why?

Well it was cool in Stockholm even that we ended up fighting in gamla stan... it was horrible, that is where I lost a tooth... But it is ok as it grew right out again.

Shut up Polish and Hungarian bitches. Clone or not. This is an absolutely masterpiece of C64 8-bit art in plain MULTICOL. Respect.

As impressive as the head looks, I find the hand more impressive.
My mind questions the accuracy of the chunks breaking away.
I guess it’s no easy task to create such an effect.

Did my eyes deceive me when I looked at this entry some days ago.
I assumed Joe created the image to the extent I thought I saw the word Joe listed in the credits.
Now it reads Clone, has it always read Clone ?

Hm. Ok, I have to admit, this is reaching far offtopic with the comments, eventhough it's rather funny.

Moderator!

Check the workstages and the former work of this fine craftsman to judge yourself if he was really that bad to not have a three year break?
As for commenting MY work, do that in the forum for the public, my images or PM me, please.

Hahaha! That's the most brilliant text ever, but pure bullshit!

No, Carl-Johan is a really a close friend of ours and he have had a break from computing during the middle of the 2000:s and we had some artistic creative discussion around this piece and earlier work (in later years actually more with the pen and not with academic knowledge). I showed him what I knew back in '99(not much) and from that we did the Aqua and so forth. He is mostly into music off c64, but is highly visual when he wants. I wonder if he even log in here other than browsing the net at times.

I do however admit that he is really brilliant and could easily get me off the chart, but that doesn't make me angry, rather the opposite as with any respected oponent/collegue.

And as of that old photo-remake you linked, we shared the same photo-session and imagery. I made "Clouds" and "Traffic" as abstract elements floating in space and Clone made the jagged carpet. Different styles, but the same original.

Quoting Joe
No, Clone is a real person in flesh and blood.
But I made the background however to this piece and suggested the colors on that layer: Simple and repetitive as usual.

AHA I KNEW IT!

Okay, after all these years of you denying the "Clone/Joe" connection, at least now we're getting a little bit closer, but I feel we're still not there. Oh no, sir, not even close. The truth must be much more shocking!

After years of keeping my eyes on you two, my current guess is the following:

- Joe showed some excellent artistic skills at young age, but apart from the brilliant thoughts and the ingeniousity, he never managed to perfect his skills in pixelling, he was barely average. After two years of trying (1990-1992), he finally gave up. But he also made a plan. An evil plan! *cue vicious laughter*

- Around 1992, a young child was abducted from the busy streets of uptown Stockholm. The parents kept searching for him for years but with no success. Finally, they gave up. Joe was pleased.

- Little did the parents know, Joe locked the kid in his house and was forcing the "clone" - as he called him in the beginning - to learn how to pixel by copying Vallejo ("the period of 1993-1996, or as we know it: Joe's early years").

- The "clone" turned out to be really talented, and became an excellent pixel-artist in only a year. So the sudden increase of Joe's pixelling quality in 1993 (started by Lunacy 7) isn't just pure chance. It's the "clone".

- He also performed a brainwashing on the kid, and built a fake identity known as "Carl-Johan Hallström". Joe never let little Carl out from his home, and always made sure to keep in front Carl an image of a very dangerous outside world. The "clone" became socially sterile and also frightened he'd lose the only familiar face if he's too curious. So he'd never say a word. The only important and real (at least "real" for him) thought which was left in him that he must continue pixelling for his smart "big brother", no matter what. "It's just how the world works", he convinced himself.

- When Carl mastered pixelling (just around the Mobile Art series - those were very intense years), Joe started giving him more and more complicated tasks based on the ideas he was collecting in his scrapbook for many many years. The C64 scene was satisfied, and so was Joe - he had all the votes and the fame. Unfortunately, what little Carl was left with was his dark room with a C64. Instead of a teddy bear, he hugged a cold, plastic joystick every night while crying himself into sleep.

- Of course, Joe knew that the day when the "clone" will question its existence, will come sooner or later. So he had to think of something quickly. Around 1999, Joe slowly introduced the scene to Carl. Of course, he gave him the nick "Clone", so he'd be sure of his place. First by letting him release a Soroyama-copy, then, step by step, some photograph copies, all the way to participating in a Wrath Design demo. Carl was more happier than ever!

- After his part in the demo (his "awakening"), we see a sudden turn to abstract pieces. A bit clumsy yet, but we have to keep in mind that he's still "working" for Joe whilst trying to develop his own style.

- 2007 is his turning point, he is hyperactive, Joe is a bit jealous and forces him to stay on the "fantasy copy" level, but it's clear that he can't have a hold on him any more. Clone is breaking off his chains!

- Joe is desperate and furious, Clone is not cooperating and doesn't want to make any more pictures for him. Despite the previous very active years, only a few graphics were released "from Joe" that year. He tries to lock down Clone once again, letting him to release only one picture in late 2008. It turns out to be a moderate success, so Clone finally gives up.

- From 2009 to late 2011, Clone is working only for Joe again. A lot of nice, but just a bit more than average pieces were made. Clone is obviously building his strength.

- And now, we're at the point where the "student finally beat the master". The superiority of Clone's own work above the one he made for Joe is just too obvious. Of course, since Joe's pixelling skills are way below Clone's, he thought that the "bird with the flower" motive will easily beat him. I can only imagine Joe's anger at the moment.

Here is a prime example of what I'm talking about (older stuff from both of them). Don't let be fooled!

The conspiracy theorist in me is still convinced that Clone = Joe (i.e. Joe's clone, hence the nick). You won't fool me! :)
Very cool stuff, anyhow.

A new Courtesy of Soviet would only be acceptable and respectable if it was made as much better than the original as modern GFX modes would allow. No excuse for getting comparable (or a tiny wee better) graphics in NUFLI.
