Seems some one bumped this release.
Watching it again today made me think i was watching a release i had not watched before, which is always good.
Checking the comments here, looks like i already did back in 2012 - Lol!
Watching Darwin today, i had the same thoughts and planned on posting:

Yes, you can make a computer program that tries all opcode combinations and registers. This is how Halloweed 3 came to be.
About your other question : If you have 6 sprites over FLI you can only have 8 cycles (4+4) per line for your code. If the last opcode is an RMW instruction, you can have 4+6 = 10 cycles per line. So for 8 lines you have a minimum of 8*8=64 cycles and a maximum of 8*10=80 cycles. 76 cycles means using RMW instructions for 6 out of 8 lines and no RMW instructions for 2 lines (6*10+2*8=76 cycles).

Oldskool, modern, some code magic. This demo has a bit for everyone.
I loved the SID demonstration and the whale pic. The rest is cool too.

I saw the code in Groepaz's his UOC doc.
I was wondering, wouldn't it be possible to write a computer program that finds more solutions? Check allowed/desirable register values for different combinations of starting values and instructions? It could go through billions of combinations.

I liked the shakey rawness of Darwin.

Completely ingenious routines, brilliant parts, interesting style, creative... it is one of the most skilled demos ever created IMHO, but it has no flow, no beat.
