The story told in Impact's scroll is that Dr. Ice had a friend stationed in Japan that sent him a package with a disk full of Japanese cracks and this is the only file on the disk that worked. The crack is credited to Ki-Dragon, whom we are supposed to believe is a Japanese cracker (I've added them to the Db for reference purposes, I dont actually believe this person exists).
The game is TNK III which was known as T.A.N.K. in Japan. It has never been known as "ROAR" anywhere.
The game's title screen claims this was published by Horito and Taito. It was a SNK game in the arcade and was published by Ocean on the C64. It could be argued that Taito published it in Japan, but the Japanese C64 was a huge flop and very likely had no software published at all after Commodore's meager offerings in 1983. There's certainly no evidence that this specific game was published in Japan. It would be the only "modern" game that was ever published in Japan, and being that the Japanese 64 is largely incompatible with the 64s of the rest of the world the fact that this game works and was stored on a floppy makes this the existence of this a statistical impossibility. There's never been a game named "ROAR", there's never been a publisher called "Horito" in Japan, and there's never been any C64 software published in Japan that is worthy of note or is compatible with other C64s. The only evidence that any of these things exist is in this very release.
Verdict: This is not a legitimate release. This is a hack of Tank/TNK III which was either put together specifically for this release or was discovered this way and had the scroll in the Impact intro written to fortify its' credentials. This gets points for creativity, certainly, but is a work of fiction.
Since the legitimacy of Impact's releases that use this "two flags" intro is in doubt, later on I will try to determine if Impact actually released this or this is one of The Chosen One's fakes. Since it's a phoney-baloney release to begin with, I'm leaning towards the latter. |
