Finally have some time to check out releases I missed out on during the year. This one is very nicely executed and he idea behind it appeals to me as someone interested in arcade games of old and home-system conversions of them. All thumbs up! | User Comment Submitted by Yogibear on 7 November 2019 User Comment Submitted by Worrior1 on 2 November 2019
Production notes.
In the demo there are all the sprite animation frames of all the 1980s Wizard of Wor versions:
- The original arcade game (1981)
- The Commodore 64 port (1983)
- The Commodore MAX Machine port (1982), which Handic Software Ab released as "Wizard" in Sweden
- The Bally Astrocade port (1982), named as ’Incredible Wizard’
- The Atari 2600 port (1982)
- Atari 8-bit computers / Atari 5200 port (1983)
- And a German C64 WoW variant ’Wizard Plus’ (1988), which is rereleased as ’Dungeon Warriors’ in 1995.
I made a quite big research work at YouTube and other net sources to get all pixels to the right place in the animation frames. Only in the original arcade game’s Wizard and Worluk sprites there could be one or two errors in pixels due to poor source material. There are 201 different PETSCII screens in the demo.
Pushead did an amazing job again to make it all work. Big thank you!
The Commodore 64 port is the closest version of the original Arcade game. In the C64 version there are high resolution sprites, chilling sound effcts and Wizard’s speeches which you can hear with Magic Voice Speech Module extension cartridge.
I haven't played the original arcade game. But based on the videos, I would say that the gameplay and also the performance of the graphics in C64 version is even better than in the original.
And the Commodore MAX Machine port was the worst ever Wizard of Wor version! | User Comment Submitted by ThunderBlade on 31 October 2019
Check Game Art Beyond for a NUFLI Wizard of Wor title pic (just in case you missed it ;-)) | User Comment Submitted by Pushead on 31 October 2019
Sometimes I forget that these pictures are actually made with only PETSCII chars... The graphics Worrior1 manage to create with PETSCII is mind blowing.... | User Comment Submitted by Mibri on 31 October 2019
More retrolicious stuff from Worrior1 and Pushead! I wonder which classic game they'll address next... | User Comment Submitted by saimo on 31 October 2019
Lovely, and thanks for bringing that wonderful SID to my attention :)
Given that the demo mentions the homebrew scene, let me tell this story (WARNING: SPAM AHEAD)...
Earlier this year I decided to make an AmigaOS 4 / Windows game heavily inspired to WoW, thinking that many would appreciate it, but then I discovered that Wow isn't as famous as I thought (among the general public, not just the C64 crowd, I mean). The game will be released shortly and it will be free. Great stuff!
The sprite comparison itself is educational but maybe I'm not WoW fanboy enough to appreciate, so after some time it just makes me shrug.
Unneccessary to say anything about c0zmo's great tune.
But especially most of the screens between the sprites are great PETSCII art! |
