I’m very proud of the narrative and design. It was awesome to work with the crazy skilled guys in GP making this possible.

I've came here from The Raistlin Papers blog. I like very much effects which are not based (so much) on VIC tricks like GP logo, "turn disk" DYPP and fluffy DYPP. But also impressed by double DYPP.

Watched this again today. It impressed me more today than it did back when it was released.. i am not quite sure why that is?

The large sideways swinging logo over logo with moons looks excellent. I also have a thing for the end part with up scrolling side-border action. The Insert Side 3 part is another part that looks great. If i wanted to nit-pick, one or two parts felt empty.. All in all, good stuff!

Damn! This was really something. Graphics, Music and Code fitted nicely together. Will have to watch this again.

(Sorry about the Goof, I got the U2 working with a fw udpdate.)

Thanks everyone :-) (I wanted to delete my comment as I didn’t mean to post here - but it doesn’t look like there’s an option to.. so I’m editing instead).

Thanks guys. Amazing to see comments still coming in.. and the continual shifting around in the CSDb charts with Booze and Oxyron jostling around in the top 3 just above us ;-p ... I don’t know that this demo is quite worthy of that - but we’ll take it while it lasts :-)

I feel so proud to have worked on this, with such an amazing team, and to see the comments from you all is just fantastic. 2020 was overall a really really shitty year for many, including myself, so it’s great that we have this crazy little scene where we can all forget about all the crap for a little while. We’ve said this a lot - but we really wanted to get this demo out there early (instead of holding for X) partly to give you guys a surprise big demo, partly so that we could hopefully move on to work on a happier theme for 2021 :-)

We’ll be back ;-)

Back in the good old days, I used to write some demos by myself and in my humble mind, I thought they were quite good. But seeing, what kind of wonders coders and GFX/Music artists like you squeezed out of the old C64 since then, I noticed that I just scratched the surface of knowing the secrets of my C64 and especially the VIC. To be honest, even back then in the 90s, I was far from beeing a top coder, but it was great fun to see some cool effects and to experience the proudness of discovering how they work by your own and maybe even tweak them a little more. I can’t imagine this feeling on modern machines. I have not coded a line since about 1993 but I still love to see our favourite 8-Bit Machine having a vivid scene after all these years and people are still stretching the limits of it! Anyway, seeing this makes me wanting to delete my old unworthy G*P Demos out of the Internet... ;-)

Just got around to finally watching this. It's clearly a labor of love with much attention to detail. From coding standpoint, I enjoyed the plot skull, the plasma and the final up-scroller. So much enjoyable artwork presented in rare thematic coherency. Finally, really loved the soundtrack, some true old school lead sounds and melodies.

Forgot to comment on the greatest demo of 2020!, bloddy hell!! wtf seriously. What an awesome demo!
Every single part had some heavy duty code'n'gfx in it, and congratulations! There are many parts here that should have a praisal of its own.

Copyfault,

Thanks to Raistlin's fully optimized scroller routine interleaved into the side border opening code, we have almost 25% of each frame for loading, on average. We have a loader call every 128 frames and load 8 char rows (64 pixel rows) in one. Each char row requires 320 bytes for the bitmap, 40+40 bytes for colors, and 88 bytes sprite data. All in all, we comfortably load and depack $f40 bytes in 100 frames worst case scenario from the slowest speed zone of the disk (tracks 1-17), leaving a 28+ frame idle gap between loader calls. Note that the only way this part could be done was loading directly under the I/O area and having one of the loader buffers at $d000-$dfff.

Thanks everyone again for your nice comments!

What a wonderful trip! It does feel like a gfx show at times, but still having other old gems in mind with loads of gfx, this adds to the overall value of this demo, at least for me!

My favourite parts are the church-window-plasma (looks like it) and -ofcourse- that magic gfx-sideborder-upscroller. Can you give an estimation of how many bytes the loader handles to load per frame? Guess it depends on too many things...

Kudos & Thanks for presenting us this kind of technical perfection!

Thanks everyone, it’s fantastic to see the demo well received. With 2020 being 2020, I was very nervous about the darkness of our theme.

This was originally going to be our X2020 demo, actually, but we decided to wrap it up earlier (we would’ve still had 2 months to finish the demo had X not been delayed). We chose to do this so that we could work on something more “light” and “happy” ... a few of us had had a bad year, losing close family and such that the Memento Mori theme was hard to work with at times.

Thanks again for the comments and votes. You’ve reenergised us to get started on our next demo sooner rather than later :-)

We love the scene.

it is fantastic what you created, as we are all insane nerds, some want to put everything into a category or place it into level of others.. I just place it in the "You did create something wonderful on the old computer that never leave us" - and you did fantastically great in doing so! To want something different from all (the few that actually see these things) is not the game of creating c64 splendor... Hollywood is maybe so but this is just people trying to create insane things on a retro computer between the time they have available from day to day life.

I think most people fail to recognize the amount of awesome code in this one. The Turn disk part is insane - 4 colors and sprite overlay DYPP twister!?!? Wow. The sideborder bitmap upscroller - I am not sure what Walt meant, but I think me meant the principle is the same :) Anyway, this is full bitmap upscrolling with streaming I/O. That's crazy. BTW, I think he mentioned the code reuse in reference to the two DYPP scrollers. The plasma with mixing colors looks just incredible. By far the best plasma I have ever seen.
The graphics are fantastic. There's a bit too much of it and looking at the comments here, the demo somehow drowns in all these amazing pixels. Nonetheless - Redcrab is my personal favorite artist on the c64, so I am just H*A*P*P*Y. The end pic is the best single thing in the demo.
The music fits the theme perfectly, which brings me to the design. I think there's too much "feels like a slide show" in this. Other than that, what an absolute pleasure to watch in all categories. Congratulations and thank you for touching our hearts and blowing our minds <3

Excelent work guys! I love the demo. Great code, gfx and msx.
It was a great surprise after so many "poor" months. But I know, you accept no limits :)
I liked that Large MM Swinging, looks very impressive. How much screens btw?
Best in it's class DYPPs, that double one over nice rasters, too.
Well done anims, design and flow.
Ohh... and that greetings scroller is great too! :)
Top notch gfx from all involved!
...
I didn't turn on my C64 for quite a time, but I finally found reason to watch real C64 demo on real HW. Thanks G*P!

Beautiful design throughout - it really feels like quite an 'event' of a demo. Thanks, G*P!

Joyless nitpicking time: does anyone else find that the snare drum sound of side 1's tune gets a bit buggy when the demo is played on a real C64? It doesn't seem to happen in VICE or if I play the SID file, and I'm quite sure that my hardware (C64C loading from UII+ cart) is OK.

Submitted by Mixer on 20 September 2020
It is a pretty demo, must say that first. Graphics are top notch and the theme works very well. Expected a black metal soundtrack, though. Why keep repeating the same effect (sinus scroller) to the death? The full border wide upscroll is awesome, and a complicated thing to code, kudos for that. (got almost exactly the same coming up, but don't want to repeat something that is already done well.)

Great Art driven demo.. Expect no less from the great G*P artists! Effects were ok.. Maybe little below par like Comaland of Uncensored impactwise.. But this is just one of the best demo till now in 2020.. (which is ofcoz a very strange year as wel all know) keep on rocking! Definately need to watch it again to hear the music.. Was a little to occupied by the Twitch chat to during the compo... (sorry)
