The upper part of the tree is 10/10
For a hires, it's pretty amazing. | User Comment Submitted by Stone on 14 August 2009
Holy crap! This is totally awesome! My first vote of 10 in this forum, no doubt. | User Comment Submitted by booker on 14 August 2009 User Comment Submitted by Hydrogen on 30 August 2008
I'm totally amazed. Great challenge. Great picture. Especially wet reflections on the land are wonderfull. Lovely picture around the lovely chair. Respect | User Comment Submitted by DeeKay on 15 December 2007
Can I just state for the record that the foliage is among my favourite parts in this pic? kthxbye! ;-D | User Comment Submitted by Mermaid on 14 December 2007
Hoild: Thank you for your comments and criticism sir.
There isn't really a whole lot of characters left for any white dithering as it is, and I'm thinking the contrast between white and light gray might have been too big, I could be wrong though, of course.
I'm not sure what you mean with a "real oldschool c64 video display" exactly, so it's hard to respond to that, are you talking about the oldest VIC chip, or a specific monitor model older than my Commodore 1081?
You say you have a problem with the leaves, that the treetop "breaks the coherency of composition, and homogenity of the style", I can't really say I agree with you, the dithering where the leaves and the sky meet is pretty much the same as in the lower half of the picture, and on the girl's dress. I didn't want to make the treetop a swirly undefined mass so I went for a combination of half-defined leaves and the dithering used below. Other than that...I must say I love the leaves in Mirage's picture (just wait and see)... :)
Edit: and here it is, w00t! | User Comment Submitted by Linus on 14 December 2007
Possibly the best hires picture ever. /me bows down. | User Comment Submitted by Hoild on 13 December 2007
Vanja, let me add comments on your picture from the graphician of the game, Newcomer, and from myself as well.
Both of us apprehend your clever use of technique. Obviously, my colleague's opinion holds the most merit here.
The two added characters enliven the scene, and turn the somber mood of the original (and Leon's remake) into something positive. Same about the butterflies.
My colleague said, he would have added some white dithering to the open area with the sky background and the butterflies, to create a light bloom effect and provide the butterflies with even more liveliness.
About the criticism in a few comments here regarding your use of grey for that gradient, and your own doubt about it, my colleague is not sure if that is a real problem when viewed on a real oldschool C-64 video display.
However, both of us found the same flaw with your picture.
-The foliage on the treetop . It breaks the coherency of composition, and homogenity of the style. Both of us independently found it as the only fault.
Please, what do you think about it?

Someone suggested the other day to draw a book for children with that lovely girl and her little white dog.
I couldn't agree more!
Something like "Vanja and Pixl in the land of butterflies".
Yeah, Pixl would be a nice name for a dog :-D | User Comment Submitted by Hate Bush on 12 December 2007
tried to come up with a more original way to express it, but i can't. instead, i'll say: EXCELLENT, incredibly so. | User Comment Submitted by anix on 12 December 2007
this one required logging in to say... excellent. it looks like many hours of work but i have the feeling it was effortless.
the girl and dog seem to enjoy being inside the c64 -- i think they wouldn't belong anywhere else. | User Comment Submitted by Burglar on 12 December 2007
excellent copy of an excellent copy of an excellent pic ;) | User Comment Submitted by Rough on 12 December 2007
@Jeff: Fine idea, a Magnetic Scrolls kinda-like fantasy epic comes to my mind... 8) | User Comment Submitted by Mermaid on 12 December 2007
Saehn, mostly I tried to stay close to Leon's picture, which used grays for the gradients. I wish I had talked to you before releasing this though as I just did a test and think I prefer it without the gray. It worked much better in Leon's pic than it does here, I think. Maybe I've just stared so much at it while working on it that I've gone blind. I have to thank Leon for inspiring me to do this version, and I have to thank Ptoing and Mirage for their feedback throughout the making of it, sadly they had both gone to bed when I finished it so I couldn't get a final opinion before releasing. Maybe I'll upload a 2nd version without the gray band later today. | User Comment Submitted by saehn on 12 December 2007
Interesting choice, the medium-grey band... what made you include it, instead of the smoother red-orange-pink-lt.grey scale? Shimmer effect? It does look like that might have been the intention. :) | User Comment Submitted by Soren on 12 December 2007
Yay! Imagine a game with gfx style like that! That could be one amazing adventure game, if you ask me! :-) | User Comment Submitted by saehn on 12 December 2007
Wow, great... I'm glad you are in the scene, who else would make such happy, light-hearted pictures? Awesome hires work. | User Comment Submitted by DeeKay on 12 December 2007
This is, without a doubt, Mermaid's best hires picture ev4r - possibly even the best hires pic of all time! 8)
The way she manages to squeeze in DITHERED detail in 8x8 cursorblocks without ANY visible cursorblocks whatsoever, I dunno how she does it... | User Comment Submitted by enthusi on 12 December 2007
Thanks for showing off hires like that :)
Screw all interlace/sprite-modes! | User Comment Submitted by Ninja on 12 December 2007

Just amazing! The attention to detail is outstanding. I love the trademark Mermaid swirl on the tree, gives a "fairy tale" feel to the picture. Mermaid #1 Hi Res #1 | User Comment Submitted by Stainless Steel on 12 December 2007

OMG! Vanja - I know your brilliant - but this is just way too much! ;D
Absolutely wonderful, delightful & playful, too.
| User Comment Submitted by HCL on 12 December 2007
God damn it!! My deephest feelings just boils up.. I wanna do a demo with a dawg and a small girl. Never felt this way ;).
But seriously, this is awesomeness. Also phun to see the likelyhoodness of Leon's tree+bench.
[edit] WTF. Just look at that dog! It's f**kn dithered!! Where is teh sprites!? | User Comment Submitted by Yazoo on 12 December 2007

DCMP: Look at the production notes? :) | User Comment Submitted by DCMP on 12 December 2007
I saw a picture by, I think, Leon that looked just like this one but just had a bench and the tree, but with the same colors. I thought it was a remake of that one.
Great image.
| User Comment Submitted by SIDWAVE on 12 December 2007
It's that doggy and girl again!!! kewl!! | User Comment Submitted by Twoflower on 12 December 2007
This is, hands down, the best use of hires I have ever seen on this machine. The texture on the leaves, the sharpness and the little color details is just pure brilliance. I knew the final result would be good, but not outright amazing.
Yeah, and somehow, on the other side of the tree another story unfolds... | User Comment Submitted by null on 12 December 2007
ah, always cheers me up to see such releases ^_^
