Damn, missed this one at the time. Very nice.

Love the Sierpinski carpet zoomer, and going to have to use the 3d section as a benchmark for my next foray into that arena now :)

(FWIW, there was zero overdraw in the Driller portion of Effluvium too, but that was purely based on back face culling and polygon priorities, no portals in sight).

I really love the 3D engine. I wish Driller could have played like that. Great pictures in here as well and some really neat effects. Booze usually doesn't disappoint and brings us great demos. Keep it up guys. :)

This is my favorite demo. I really can't explain why. Perhaps it's because I'm not as much into VIC abuse as other people. Perhaps it's Archmages outstanding artwork or Dane's minimalistic soundtrack or the awesome code by HCL and Jackasser. It could be that it is because somehow this doesn't feel like a trackmo. Or maybe it's because it is just so damn cool.

I love this demo! But this comment isn't about the demo, but the MUSIC. First time I heard it, I didn't really get it. But it has grown on me. It's minimalistic and suggestive =) Perfect music to use when coding. My wife just came by and asked me "Do you really listen to this?" (making a facial expression saying 'Are you nuts?'... possibly also thinking 'Why did I marry a computer nerd?'). Thanks Dane for making my day! =)

Love how the filter changes in time with the flipping pic. I really like it when music is in sync with the grafix/animation - guess it's one of my favourite things when a demo has that. Great music (although it sounds like it's had to spare complexity/extra layers to make the demo run smooth... maybe?) and very nice pics. I'm really not in much of a postion to comment on you veterans but there ya go :P

I love the 3D part! :)
And for the bugs in the engine, the original id Tech 1 engine had its share too.
Not so big and better hidden trough a bunch of hacks, but thats the price for fast fixed point math.

(I know how the old raycaster engines work on paper, but dont ask me to code one thats beyond old Wolf3D... ;) )

I second Ksubi's opinion about the music; I think it's great, and don't understand the fuzz. I especially like the end part when the music wraps up, and this is imo the most memorable end in any demo. Classic stuff all the way.

this demo grows on me. I like the minimalistic fades. feels fast n dirty, still there's a lot of care, and the fx is mindblowing, then it all fits up with the music (tailored for each fx) and gfx (archmage manages to create a whole world where andropolis lives) as a whole. one of the few these days that makes me come back for another watch.

Brilliant! cant see what the fuss is about with the music by Dane, I personally think its incredible, even more so with such limited rastertime.
Other notable aspects: the zoomers rule as usual and the end part is out of the this world. Graphics by Archmage is the usual high quality expected by the pixel wizard. Overal: a superb production :-)

@Graham: Finally someone called the effect by its true name. I've been rather amused by the different names there has been suggested so far. :) And indeed, both that effect and the group name displayer in the intro was inspired from the PC Demo called Stargazed, but ofcourse converted to 2D and low fidelity. :)

AmiDog: The C128 version actually runs in about 160% since I not only use the 2mhz mode in the border, but also the relocatable ZP and Stack features. In addition to that I also use the top 64kb to unroll the EOR-filler completly.

A little OT:

After seeing the amazing 3D part for the first time, I wondered how well it would run on other Commodore 8-bits and tried to make some calculations.

VIC-20: (312 * 71) = 22152 (119%)
C64: (312 * 63) - (25 * 40) = 18656
C128: C64 + (112 * 63) = 25712 (138%)
Plus/4: ???

Yes I know the VIC-20 would be two-colored or really blocky, some more C64 cycles will probably be lost due to the badlines, and it takes some cycles to setup 2MHz mode in the border of the C128...

However, the Plus/4 one made me really confused. Reading Commodore Hacking 12: "The speed depends on TED's current task. It generates the slower clock signal when refreshing DRAM or fetching data for the video screen. Otherwise, the high clock signal is generated."

So... Does that mean something like:

112 * 57 * 2 (top/bottom border)
200 * 17 * 2 (left/right border)
(200 - 50) * 40 (double badlines, slower speed)

= 25568 (137%) ?

Not counting DRAM refreshes, whenever they happend. Does anyone here know?

Quite surprised to see some moaning about the soundtrack, I really loved it and played the demo 5 times prior to posting just to listen to the soundtrack!

Actually to me sounds like a very raw and dirty greasy oily garage remix of EOD sid (if that makes sense) thumbs up for it!!!

Good point, Wisdom. In this case it meant I had to scrap both vibrato, slide fx and pulse programming. That kind of gives you limitations for both lead instrument and bassline.

Quite nice demo, well put together and I applaud the 3D part, which is really massive.

On the other hand, I just wonder how 6 rasterlines might translate to having good or bad music. I guess the number of rasterlines available for music is more about the sound quality rather than the notes that can be put together.

Jesus, I am entitled to my own opinion, aren't I? I just don't like music that is mere chaos, never did. And that's just what it was, my opinion, no "pissing contest" or anything some people seem to interpret into that. Going against the flow is good in my book, but if you overdo it, it gets annoying (see: Nosfe-Demos and their public reception!) I have to say I like some of the screendesign ideas in Faux Visage somewhat.

@Deekay. I'm not going to take you up on your attempt of starting a pissing contest here. I'll just leave you in peace to contemplate the importance of people going against the grain. And you can clean your wet shoes while you're at it. ;)

DeeKay: Come on, that one was completely uncalled for! The soundtrack to Faux Visage may not be the epitome of heavy prog riffing a la Meshuggah (or indeed King Crimson/Fantômas as Linus suggested), but after 17 years of composing I know enough about music to know it's not a bad venture into the style. And it's certainly the first attempt I know of on the C64.

Very very nice, has some fresh new effects (liked the cube in the beginning and the zooming recursive squarethingy a lot!) and nice gfx, but the music is awful in some parts and it seems that some parts of the gfx weren't quite finished (e.g. background in the end picture). That's not what I'm used to from the master of pixel perfection! :-)

@Hoild: Ever noticed that those games are a collection of stand alone small rooms running in seconds per frame with progress bar between each frame?!? :D This is actually the first implementation of a portal based 3d-engine on the c64. Those other old engines all used poor painters algorithm with tons of overdraw and useless calculations. Mine is similar to Duke Nukem 3D and draw 0, null, zip, zero overdraw and don't even consider walls that are invisible. Further on, the level could be about 4x bigger actually but that would make the end-part truly boring to watch and it's already too long, but I really couldn't figure out any nice way to show off a 3d-engine. It's quite difficult, ideas are actually most welcome.

Thanx for all the nice comments! :)

Anyways, hidden joy mode in the 3d-engine was left out due to three still left render bugs. However, if you wanna see them still you may try the doom_workstage.d64 file I just posted.

The disk has two targets, one for c64 and one for c128 (run in vice x64 or x128). Use joy#2 to control it.

Have fun!

massive, massive demo

I'm in awe over the code and graphics. cant get much better than that.

I disagree with the ppl saying that the 3d part is too long, it's actually showing off how much 3d they can fit in 64k. really really cool! wish there was a hidden option to get joystick control though ;)

the only downside for me was the music, took ages to get going a bit and still never really took off. imho it hurt the flow of this kickass demo a bit too much. the tune would've fit a lot better as endtune or for a note or something.
I really liked the music sync during the vertical pic flipper btw, very nice.

everything else is second to none, totally awesome gfx by Archmage and Dane. and the code, very nice to see so much progress. keep it up JA & HCL!

Very nice demo and congratulations for beating us! :-) It's quite rare that I'm rather amazed by almost all effects in a demo but this one did it for me. And the design is quite OK I think. Could've been better I suppose as always, but hey...

@Hoild: your "made in a single day" comment is totally WTF material. Dude, what's wrong with you? If you can't see the serious amount of work that went into this demo then perhaps you shouldn't comment here.

Holy shit, great show! And very strong music, even though it's a bit minimalistic, for rastertime reasons apparently.

Archmage's gfx are great, and I love the "Escher" feel to the two pictures by Dane in the splitter. The recursive zoomer is a cool idea too.

Unrelated thought: Someone should make a whole demo around the "Gödel Escher Bach" thing one day. :)

That was like the worst achievement we could ever get i suppose. No, this demo was *not* made during one night of serious drunkness etc. Booze spent ~2 of the most sunny months on developing 3 parts from scratch, some transitions and music. That's fast work in my book, don't need to pretend something else.. Still, Instinct did the hard work here.

This is such a satisfying offering from everyone involved in its production. I was blown away, and I know I'll spend time watching it again and again. The colors on the chessboard rotator/zoomer were amazing, and I loved the changing color effect of the pic with the y rotation effect. I used to not be a big fan of pc effects like 3d cities, yet productions such as this have made me come around to that point of view, as has my growing experience as a coder. Well done on the 3d engine, it is abslutely amazing and fits in perfectly with the technical slant of the artwork. 10.

Too much of a coder demo, and my vote reflects that.

Better design and direction would be needed. Just as GFX and music are major components for a demo -- and thankfully all coders take that for a given --, so is design and direction but unfortunately this is still beyond the grasp of many coders.

I realize building parts and effects around a design concept is a no go in a single day production, though.
