Love this demo. My idea of demos is still stuck in the time of Bones, Horizon, Upfront and the likes. DYSP's, DYCP's, stretchers, all combined with open borders, that's old school coderporn.
Colorcyling should be reserved for sprites in multiplexers and boasting about those multiplexers in 1x1 scrollers ;-)

Any special settings needed to make this run with VICE 2.4 (Windows 7 64-bit)?

Halts as the music begins and the borders flash and the diskdrive "spins".

I have enabled true emulation of drive etc. Cant spot anything that doesnt work on other demos? bad http zip maybe?

Incredible stuff. I'm not a programmer but knowing what the default stuff is a 64 can do, then this is some very sophisticated code right here. Awesome tech demo of beefed up retro effects.

Nice one.. I keep coming back somehow.. Thought first it was for the nice dysps which keeps surprising me with another detail i didnt realise... But my mind is somehow trapped in amusement of the audio for this, which makes it so enjoyable.. Love the intro music that it takes some time to flip the disc :) And the layers in the last part are just so amazing.

@Zaz: Nope, crunched dysps were both made in 2009. Didn't even know yours were crunched, you don't make any commercial of it :). But you're right about the bad timing. Time Machine was in fact delayed as we hoped to release something more futuristic before we went back in time again (after "1991"). But.. now we're stuck here, gotta find a way back i hope.

From a coding point of view, can't really be faulted and nice to see such a diversity of DYSP methods. Visually, I wish this hadn't been released so soon after '1991'.
The DYSP code in both the spritecrunch parts looks remarkably similar to mine in 'POP'; did someone disassemble my code? :)

@Groepaz: Yes, that's true. I used to bring my c128 to parties back in the days :). I rarely use it today since the keyboard is bad, probably full of dust and oxide :(. I just ran the demo on it now though, and i see what you mean :(. It's a shame.. Plus the fact that my c128 nowadays has an old SID, even darker than on my breadbox.. so none of my machines do any justice to Dane's music :(.

Nice stuff. For a non c64 coder it may appear simple but a lot of timing methods in this demo. A lot more complex than it seems. For the concept and execution of this its great work

at least judging from the sid tune used, the demo is supposed to be watched on a new C64 though =) and no, i mean the grey dot junk that appears between some parts, it cant be avoided in splits obviously :) (and x64sc -model c64c can be a great help with fixing that crap indeed)

But it's kind of symptomatic also, i'm a c64 coder so why would i care about modern software? ;P. Also my breadbox don't show these bugs (i assume you mean d020/21 splits on newer VIC).

I did miss a world record multiplexer though, xbow still holds it at 144?

So many great effects and thank you so much for the "space bar" mode. Call me a geezer but i actually enjoy watching the dysps moving for an hour or so while i try to figure out how it all works :)
Strong performance from our Valsary is another highlight of the demo not to mention Dane's music.
@HCL: you've managed to provoke half of the active coders in this demo. If this is not causing Crossbow to counter attack with some new records then nothing will. And also knowing that you've recently had another baby i just fail to understand how do you manage to put out so many great releases. Could you write a tutorial for the rest of us? :)

My favourite demo so far this year, featuring plenty of unbeatable code, ace graphics and some very well crafted music (not the least player wise). I can only imagine the frustrations HCL must've gone through with some of the parts before he got them working... Well done! :-)

Also big thanks for the lovely notefile, I wish more people (me included) took the time to code some actual noters again... These days it's all Internet this and Internet that, and it's nice to be able to forget about it from time to time, lean back and enjoy some oldschool information sharing, using the tried and soulful techniques of yore.

Thanks for making a proper version of this demo. "Vintage Data Gourmet" It's always a great joy reading HCLs scrollers. Impressive code, gfx and music although lacking a bit in the transition department ;-) "Was not done in five minutes". Amen! Well this demo leaves me with a smile on my face. Nice one!

I love this demo... this is what demo used to be in the past, just better! Music is also really cool and my daughter Vilde made some arabic dance moves to it while the sprites flew and music spourted out! Great graphics and transitions are effective and fast and good... I love this! Congratulations n a great demo! Another point I really like is the fact that this demo is widescreen, it just feel so widescreen the whole thing because of sideborder on all stuff... nam nam.

HCL, how long did you lock in in front of your computer to finish this? Insane!
I just image HLC eating some cornflakes 6.00h in the morning, starting to code, still eating with one hand, coding until noon, putting pizza in the oven, still coding while it bakes, eating pizza with one hand while coding, telling boss not feeling good today not coming to work, continue coding until say 6 pm, eating an apple, coding until 12 pm, falling asleep infront of 64, waking up at 6.00h am, starting again until while(true) is interrupted by if (demo_finished()) {break;}. Then uploading and falling into coma for one year and waking up not remembering what he has done and not recognizing all the fame he got. Starting normal life again. ;-)

As usual I have problems with all the cooler demos released. I cannot get this to work on the latest 1541U-II firmware on my C64 or my C128. In Vice 2.4 OS X it just stalls with CPU JAM! Grr...
