Original download from 2013 restored, each new release requires a new entry.
Use the forums to discuss this release, comments aren't the right place for update talk, etc. | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 2 June 2016
Fixed a crashing bug when mistakenly pressing both rmb and lmb when selecting, plus some PET hires specific tweaks. | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 21 May 2016
Stick character shifting with +/- was mysteriously broken after loading an image, but fixed now (in the binary version too). | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 7 May 2016
Let's do things right: from now on it's always Command-whatever on the Mac instead of the old Ctrl-whatever. First and foremost to avoid problems with Ctrl-LMB producing a RMB click, and secondly to match with the platform conventions. | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 6 May 2016
Next up probably a feature freeze to iron out the existing bugs, but here's some new goodies anyway:
* Free-form area selection: ctrl-rmb, except ctrl-shift-mb on the Mac
* More error-tolerant rectangle selection
* Ctrl-a for quickly selecting the whole picture
* Character-only mode (leave color intact) with right shift
* Support for NTSC/PAL/square pixel aspect ratios
* A lot better support for loading images across platforms
* New hand-tuned C64 to Plus/4 color remapping
* Improved PET hires preview and png export
* A new machine selector(!)
* Various bugfixes again | User Comment Submitted by Shine on 21 April 2016 User Comment Submitted by Marq on 21 April 2016
After a couple of weeks of heavy coding (instead of doing a thesis...) there's a new binary release with:
- Heavily reduced CPU use
- Space toggles selection on and off
- Finally a Clear button
- Merge lets you combine animations/images
- Smaller exported .prg files
- Preliminary SEQ export (thanks to Six for help)
- Arbitrary image sizes from 1×1 up as long as you have big enough screen
- Lowercase chars supported on the C-64 and Plus/4 (right click on the char selector).
- Frame-specific undo
- Improved animation thumbnails
- More responsive char/color selector
- More robust image loading across the platforms
- More robust Preview shouldnt crash anymore
- Bigger file selector windows(!)
- All in all, a big internal overhaul, a number of bugfixes plus probably a few new bugs too
Thanks to Dr.TerrorZ for testing and the lowercase remap table. | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 6 April 2016
In the official binary version: preliminary support for larger than 40x25 images (set through prefs.txt), bigger file selector window and a few less notable fixes.
In the brand new source-only beta: SEQ export, thanks to Six! Mostly untested and doesn't support lower case chars, but oh well. | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 26 March 2016
A new binary release that incorporates plenty of little improvements: PET 80 chars mode, more robust file handling, better shifting of line characters, fixed info display for the typing mode and a little fix for PET floodfill. | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 17 March 2016 User Comment Submitted by Marq on 19 January 2016
A new mode supported: PET 80x25 hires. A bit preliminary and untested, but there it is. | User Comment Submitted by Broti on 17 October 2015
Yay... superb update *two thumbs up* | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 17 October 2015
Aaand a new addition: prefs.txt. Place it in the same folder as the exe and you can control some basic defaults. | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 17 October 2015
For those of you who have been unhappy about the CPU usage: there's several new optimizations now which should remedy the situation to a certain extent (less useless repainting over and over). It's still not fast, but at least you should notice some difference in the responsiveness and CPU load. | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 12 October 2015
A couple of new bits: an improved eraser that works more consistently with floodfill, plus more reliable BASIC exporters that shouldn't create too long rows anymore (not tested much, tho). | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 23 July 2015
A brand new binary release, which should let recent OS X versions run the editor again (you still need to have Java installed). Another little improvement is that if there are multiple frames, they are exported separately to facilitate easier video creation. | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 19 July 2015
I just need to know what chars can go in and how to interleave the colors and characters :) | User Comment Submitted by morphfrog on 19 July 2015 User Comment Submitted by TheRyk on 26 November 2014 User Comment Submitted by Shine on 4 March 2014
@ Hammerfist :
Very nice idea to implement. A directory editor feature would kick ass for sure! :) | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 11 January 2014
I've been thinking of it already, but as of now I'm really busy with real-life duties, so can't promise much. Also suffering from a bit of a hangover after so much PETSCII abuse :) | User Comment Submitted by Hammerfist on 10 January 2014
Hi Marq,
Thanks again for making an awesome tool to allow us all to paint even without proper hardware!
Now your tool is such a success - and I am definitely one of its fans - will you be accepting suggestions for v2?
Mine would be to add support for a directory-PETSCII preset to create set-2-color PETSCII art of 16 x endless characters for the C64 floppy directories, perhaps even with some way to save them to .d64.
I promise I'll make a few fancy PETSCII directory logos with it! :D | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 25 December 2013
Switching grid (g) and info (i) off will speed the program up quite a bit, too. | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 24 December 2013
I agree, but that's how it's built and a bit too late to change it completely now :) It is capped to 60 Hz by Processing, but if your machine isn't too recent, it might eat up a lot of CPU. The source is there: decreasing the framerate and switching to ZOOM=1 will help. | User Comment Submitted by BlackJack on 23 December 2013
Really nice one, but it turns my laptop into a radiator. Even if I do nothing but start the application it takes 100% of one core and the fan starts howling shortly after.
It doesn't make much sense to recompose and draw a static image again and again as fast as the processor is able to. Even if something is changed the frame rate should be limited so some sane amount. IMHO. | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 19 November 2013
Any tips as to in what order the SEQ should be? Any forbidden chars? Seems to be just a flat file. | User Comment Submitted by Hein on 13 November 2013
Love it, just when I started to think about adding some animations, the feature was available in the latest release. | User Comment Submitted by morphfrog on 8 November 2013
Very nice cross platform tool indeed.
Yeah I see below it dosen't have SEQ export, are there any plans for that i n future versions? | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 28 October 2013
One of the biggest missing features added: multiple frame support. Additional frames can be used for sketching and storage or even for animation. At the moment the animations are just saved/loaded, so you can't play them back on real hw without some coding, but if there's time and interest some sort of viewer is a possibility. | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 18 October 2013
No seq so far. Try pressing alt for a simple 1/4 char drawing mode. | User Comment Submitted by Sixx on 18 October 2013
Is it able to export to .seq (BBS usage) and 1/4 char paint mode? | User Comment Submitted by TheRyk on 18 October 2013
Yeah and MarqueeMarq has to change his Nick into PETSC(ii)hop Boy :D | User Comment Submitted by redcrab on 18 October 2013 User Comment Submitted by bepp on 18 October 2013
What about PET Shop Pro (flirting with a well-known drawing tool) :-) | User Comment Submitted by TheRyk on 18 October 2013
like that suggestion for name of final V :)
(though the "-fier" might suggest msileadingly it was a converter...) | User Comment Submitted by Lightfoot on 18 October 2013
Love the tool, fun to work with.
Guess it will raise the standards of PETSCII-art excellence.
I recommend 'Petsciifier' as a new name. ;) | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 17 October 2013
Added today: a preview window. Note that real machines don't have square pixels :) | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 16 October 2013
Even more speedup. The current version drawing code is about 3x as fast as yesterday should help those who are stuck with an old 'puter. | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 16 October 2013
A couple of important developments: most importantly a big speedup (the drawing code is more than twice as fast) and the possibility to type PETSCII directly from the keyboard. Bugfixes and additions here and there. The grid is better visible on some backgrounds. | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 15 October 2013
I agree the name could be shinier, but it's what the one-night Processing project was originally called :) | User Comment Submitted by iLKke on 15 October 2013
The tool is quite nice but for God's sake, change the name, man! :D | User Comment Submitted by TheRyk on 14 October 2013
This became quite good! Thx for all the builds, enhancements etc. Will give it a try in the next two weeks :) | User Comment Submitted by Dr.j on 14 October 2013
Looks like very handy tool. great job to the author | User Comment Submitted by finchy on 14 October 2013
Great tool, fun to play around with! | User Comment Submitted by Broti on 13 October 2013
Lemme just quote Lt. Frank Drebin: I love it! | User Comment Submitted by Luca on 13 October 2013
Uuuh, up up for the Plus/4 feature! \o/
It also works great in case of C64 <-> Plus/4 PETSCII conversion.
| User Comment Submitted by Marq on 12 October 2013
Commodore Plus/4 support in the beta now, if you're into something like that. Will appear on the mainstream version after a bit of testing. | User Comment Submitted by Shine on 9 October 2013
Very handy and nice petscii tool! 10/10 :) | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 9 October 2013
Simple floodfill, color remapping, improved file name/path handling, direct PRG export for VIC-20... Starting to be quite happy with the feature set (= don't feel like coding much more right now :) | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 6 October 2013
Oh well. So many people have asked that I guess I'll comply: direct PRG export for C64. Press e, which will create export.prg. And don't ask me how to make a D64! :)
edit: Now it will create a prg with the same name as the image itself. | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 6 October 2013
Aaaanndd now there's finally a standalone application for Linux/Mac/Windows! Plenty of other added bits and bugfixes, too. | User Comment Submitted by Nuckhead on 6 October 2013
Thanx for help, tested petcat but I'm not that skilled so no working :( hehe
Edit : thanxs sooo much for "press e" :) | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 4 October 2013
Additions: vertical smart flip, bugfixes, reference image background, image to PETSCII conversion, PNG export. | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 3 October 2013
Check the homepage, there's some tips. Basically you need to export the image and compile/convert it. If you have VICE installed:
- Press b (basic export)
- petcat -text -w2 -o export.prg export.bas
The resulting prg can then be run directly, albeit slowly. For more speed use the asm/C exporters and install the related tools. The exported source code contains instructions on how to compile it. | User Comment Submitted by Nuckhead on 2 October 2013
Great tool, I get it to work - but, anybody up for a quick how to for getting your 'picture' over to a 64format/Vice? | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 2 October 2013
A bit better representative screen capture, plus a lot more: improved flipping, "smart" sets of characters, and a new web page with a gallery plus help. | User Comment Submitted by rexbeng on 1 October 2013
Great! I always was curious to try the C64's PETSCII graphics format and this tool made it easier! Keep it up! | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 1 October 2013
Much more again: intelligent horizontal flip, info display, cursor crosshair, PET support, bugfixes, text input mode and even undo. | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 30 September 2013
VIC-20 support plus some minor speedup/cleanups. | User Comment Submitted by Hammerfist on 29 September 2013
Looking awesome! With my C64 still buried under so much junk from the move, I completely rely on replacement hardware such as emulators for my graphics. I was hoping to compete in the PETSCII compo and this seems like the perfect tool. Loving it so far and will keep checking this page for updates! :D | User Comment Submitted by TheRyk on 29 September 2013
Judging from the screenshot, this seems quite promising, looking 4wd to finished version. But as Marq & others hinted: Some executable file that doesn't require _whatever_, pleaaase! | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 29 September 2013
Just in: greatly improved copypaste. In works: simple 1/4 char drawing mode. | User Comment Submitted by FATFrost on 29 September 2013
Nice work!! I'm gonna see what's possible.. ;) | User Comment Submitted by Marq on 28 September 2013
I'll make a standalone java Applet when the feature set starts to be complete... For now it needs a bit of effort, sorry! :) | User Comment Submitted by chatGPZ on 28 September 2013 User Comment Submitted by Marq on 28 September 2013
A quick Processing hack, will improve soon(ish)! |
