When Zoo'13 started approaching, me and Dr. TerrorZ wanted to contribute to the PETSCII competition, but couldn't really find a proper tool that would work on Linux and Mac. EDSCII was pretty close and a source of inspiration, but it didn't adhere to real PETSCII color limits or output anything suitable for a real C64. So, a one-night Processing project called "PETSCII" (the first name I came up with when saving the file) was born just to be able to plot some chars onscreen and then compile them into a standalone program. After a serious feature creep I thought the tool could be useful for others, too, and published it online - initially as source-only, but since so many graphicians had a hard time running it I had to make a standalone version. VIC-20/PET/Plus4 support was not a big deal to add afterwards.
