I did not look into code, but suppose it's mere KERNAL Load/Scratch/Save as found on codebase. This is nothing to complain about but just what we crackers do to make a hisaver run on almost every gamer's setting, even including fancy stuff like SD2IEC with fancy KERNAL stuff with #fancy-device-no. (<- Greetings to Dataland). Bad news for tape-fetishists: Normally $BA will only be hardcoded #$08 if it's unset, i.e. #$00. Once it's hardcoded #$08 and done properly, it should not crash even without proper error handling no matter whether there is anything plugged at device #$08 or not. But if you load from tape, we find #$01 in $BA, so it stays #$01. Would take little changes/few bytes to also check for #$01, though, to bend it to #$08.
But in this case: Only thing Didi could(/should?) have done differently in this release is proper "[E]nable/[D]isable HiSaver" with [D] leading to no-KERNAL-operation-nonsense-at-all. Choice between mere "[T]rainer/[H]iScore" and [H] leading to "[L]oad/[R]eset" with even [R] making it wanna load from dev. #$BA is not the best idea in the world, as for Resetting HiScore no loading should be necessary if you poked default score/zeros at the RAM bytes where hiscore is stored in game (which however would not prevent crashes once you scored a hiscore and it tries to save, of course). | User Comment Submitted by Neo-Rio on 3 August 2016
One possible solution is to abort the high-score saving if the last drive used to load was not a valid disk drive number (such as 1, for tape). That *might* also prevent DMA loading issues that you could get from say, even an EasyFlash 3 CRT image load. | User Comment Submitted by Neo-Rio on 3 August 2016
Don't feel too bad. There's quite a few cracks with high-score savers that don't do error checking.
And yeah... some people still like mixtapes for some reason :D | User Comment Submitted by hedning on 2 August 2016
Umm. Yeah. That's true. But those with a 1541u and Chameleon should learn how to mount disks properly. ;) | User Comment Submitted by chatGPZ on 2 August 2016
i am more thinking of 1541u, chameleon, MMC64/replay there - with sd2iec it wouldnt be a problem at all :) | User Comment Submitted by hedning on 2 August 2016
Groepaz: SD2IEC is not stock hw. On the other hand you are right about error handling and rocket science. | User Comment Submitted by chatGPZ on 2 August 2016
since its a onefiler, its probably also quite common to run it from sd card via dma load, without a drive. perhaps even more common than loading it from an actual disk these days :) | User Comment Submitted by Didi on 2 August 2016
I never liked tapes... too slow. ;)
Did not expect anyone putting a highsaver version onto a tape. | User Comment Submitted by chatGPZ on 2 August 2016
proper error handling isnt rocket science however :=) | User Comment Submitted by hedning on 2 August 2016
*sigh* Enjoy your datassette. ;) | User Comment Submitted by Neo-Rio on 2 August 2016
I'm just nitpicking the imperfections ;)
In fact if you load the prog from tape, the high scores attempt to load from tape too! :D except it can't! | User Comment Submitted by hedning on 2 August 2016
Don't hold your breath. The release works fine with a disk drive, which is standard. As long as you know that, there is no problem. I'm with Didi here. | User Comment Submitted by Snabel on 2 August 2016
So, i should wait for the V1.14 +5H 101% with the fixed hiscore saver instead? :) | User Comment Submitted by Didi on 2 August 2016
Well, highsavers are usually made to run with a disk drive. No need to mention that on every release IMO. | User Comment Submitted by Neo-Rio on 2 August 2016
high score saver crashes everything if no disk drive is around when it tries to load them. | User Comment Submitted by Rock on 26 June 2015
Woah! I made it through! Cool game:) | User Comment Submitted by hedning on 26 June 2015
