unfortunately my coding article (3d series part2) somehow did not get linked in for some reason unknown to me.

but the positive surprise for me is that someone actually reads my coding articles :)

Well, it's nice that nobody cares shit about the fact that one of the chapters doesn't work at all (eg. "Adresses"). Nobody mentions it in the review, and the editors release the magazine containing this miss and a bugged-up tune by Drax. You just don't do that. Ever. I loved Nightlords partyreport though.

There are things I love about pbc... their outfit, for one thing. And usually, the text is okay. But this issue of pbc left a horribly bad taste in my mouth - after the initial shock of drax's song being corrupted (hint: the version on the disk is also corrupted... don't waste time trying to get a clean version like I did :), while I was reading the drax interview - which was passable - I thought that, no, I shouldn't judge this yet, things have to get better. And so, I read all of the articles. Nightlord's article on 3d programming would have been okay, if I hadn't felt like I'd read it before - the meat is coming later, though, to be fair. The article on random number generators was sort of interesting, except that the preconditions of the generator's randomness weren't mentioned in the mag :) (hint: don't use it in your IRQ, since part of the randomness algorythm is raster count :). But I mean, I was able to read that, at least, and I'm somewhat used to pbc's coding articles being factually suspect - that doesn't bother me, I crave ideas more than spoonfeeding - and although I would have liked to have seen coverage of algrythmic methods that don't rely on peeking bits of ram, it did the job. Richard Bayliss's article on the history of demos, honestly, it made me feel better about my own magazine. It is one of the worst pieces of text that I have ever attempted to read. I did complete it, but it took me three attempts.

Did you ever see the movie "Battlefield Earth"? The experience is pretty close.

My egotistical opinion is that the pbc staff were really grasping to release, and so just wrote any old crap - which is fine, if you do it with style, but they seemed to miss that target by some distance, sadly. le sigh.

Maybe there is some reason why this issue is so terrible, I'm not sure. Life happens, it's true, but if you claim to be a professional diskmag, which pbc somewhat does, then you have to at least attempt to transcend this. I didn't feel like they even tried, and that is always sad to read - instead of a feeling of pride in the scene, all I read was a feeling of hopeless resignation that it's not even worth trying anymore.

(@Twoflower: actually, i blamed the addresses chapter on emulation, for some reason, and decided it wasn't worth trying on a real c64. and then, by the time i got to csdb, i'd forgotten about it. but yes, also lame).

Hmm, I only checked a few of the chapters but the one by Richard about the 'history of demos for the emulation scene (..)' is by far one of the worst written pieces of text I've ever read.

When chosing the chapter Adresses it asks me to "please flip the disk and press a key". Where's the second disk?

The party report by Nightlord was nice.
