It's a preview of the method of doing a jacketed BBC to C64 port without the mentioned possible optimisations, hence the current advice to run with warp on vice, it is in no way a justification for the current speed. Released "as is" because people kept asking about it. | User Comment Submitted by STE'86 on 10 September 2011
I don't think any c64 code is ever a complete waste of time these days tbh. i was only commenting that its taken you 6 months to reiterate what was said on day one, minute one of this upload (by the uploader no less)
and to take the time to point out post number 2 to you :)
edit: if i wanted to promote confrontation i would have posted something facetious like "no shit Sherlock?" wouldn't i? :) | User Comment Submitted by iAN CooG on 10 September 2011
I did read but it's irrelevant what others think about this, that's my opinon about it and just wanted to comment on it to justify why I voted it only 5. And if you want I'll spend more words on this: this is completely a waste of time if the result is so crap. Justifying the slowness saying "use vice warp instead" is plain lame.
I hope you will accept a negative comment without generating the usual drama because you're getting really boring over here. | User Comment Submitted by STE'86 on 10 September 2011
well shaft me sideways, thanks for taking the time to point out it slows down. even after reading posts 1 and 2 (and the trivia)on here.
you did read the first posts on here didnt you? :P | User Comment Submitted by iAN CooG on 10 September 2011
becomes unplayably slow if there's more than one object moving. nice experiment code-wise, crap as game. | User Comment Submitted by Jak T Rip on 10 July 2011
why dont you team up with the other guy from youtube, then? | User Comment Submitted by macx on 18 May 2011
Please continue to develop this one, and when done sell it as a boxed version. I am a sucker for Solstice. | User Comment Submitted by JCB on 22 April 2011
@doc, this is a new one, that previous version is nothing to do with me. I'm often confused why that guy never released what he'd done... | User Comment Submitted by d0c on 22 April 2011 User Comment Submitted by Richard on 22 April 2011
This preview looks promising ;) | User Comment Submitted by JCB on 22 April 2011
From what I've found digging through the code, the biggest speedup opportunity should come from the fact that they had to squeeze this into 32k on the BBC and everything that is drawn is decompressed into a little buffer, flipped if needs be then rotated by X times (using rotates so the more it's offset from 0 in the byte the longer it takes).
The extra 32k on the C64 should give the possibility for at least the moving objects in the room (usually only a couple) to be pre-flipped and shifted.
There are also another couple of optimisations in the main draw loop (only a few cycles per iteration but it's called a LOT) which would help a little.

Head over heels! If you need help optimizing the code, feel free to ask (or raise that in the forums). Indeed very nice preview - thumbs up! | User Comment Submitted by The Shadow on 22 April 2011
Great to see this produced. This project has been going for a long time. Keep up the great efforts :) | User Comment Submitted by Tom-Cat on 22 April 2011
Very nice. It is not THAT much slower than the speccy version. Maybe when there are a lot of objects in the room it slows down, but not to a crawl. It is comparable to the Head Over Heels speed (which is MUCH slower than the spectrum version too). If this is without optimisations then I think it is gonna be very good speed-wise when it is optimised. Great work ! Bring on Alien-8 and Pentagram (they use the same/similar engines) :) | User Comment Submitted by The Phantom on 22 April 2011
Hey.. I'm the magical '42' for another 2 months or so.. Old? I think not.
This game reminds me of a game I played once before on C64, but can't quite place the name. | User Comment Submitted by Medicus on 21 April 2011
Most C64-freaks are old... so slow is not so bad, eh?
| User Comment Submitted by Yogibear on 21 April 2011
Funny preview! These gfx make me think of the days I owned a Speccy next to my 64. I even made some beep music then! | User Comment Submitted by Mr. SID on 21 April 2011
Hey, great job! It feels good if it just runs, doesn't it? | User Comment Submitted by Skate on 21 April 2011
it's slow but very nice. i'm sure you'll find a way to optimize your routines soon. good work! | User Comment Submitted by STE'86 on 21 April 2011
christ u might have warned us it was slow :)
never mind i am sure one of the supercoders on here will soon sort it out for you. ;) | User Comment Submitted by JCB on 21 April 2011
It's slow ;)
VICE with max speed set to 200 is quite nice.
For those that have never played the original. Joystick left/right to turn anticlock/clockwise, up to move forward, fire to jump (bigger jump the longer it's held) and down to pickup/drop items. |
