Nice to have a prg for testing this particular behaviour!
@enthusi: Try switching off/on you c64 and load the prg 10 times in a row. On some (dunno if all or most or just a few) machines you will see the dots either flicker or be completely gone. If they flicker, they'll probably go away within a couple of minutes. Then if you power off/on again they might come back.. or not.. or they will be rock stable for 30 power cycles.

Edit: hmm.. now I can't get those dots back at all... YOU FIXED IT! :P

I've had adding emulation of those grey dots in VICE on my list for some years now. It's sensible to emulate those (of course as an option) for developing purposes, as it sucks not to have them in the emulator while they are a nuisance on the real thing if not taken care of. The instability issues are no problem there because their presence cannot be queried by software anyways, afaik.

This is how it looks on my dev machine and at least 3 others here. Stable as can be - ugly, but stable...
I encourage everyone to check on his own machine :)

the blocker for the accurate gray dot emulation is its unstability. they fade in,fade away, flicker, the underlying hardware reason has a varying time duration and all of this changes when you try another C64 or just do various things on it. if it was a matter of drawing a grey dot when you write to d02x it would be emulated atleast in Hoxs- it handles more obscure bugs of the new Vic.

@WVl yet it is there in MANY C64s. Check i.e. GianaSisters intro... If its not emulated people wont care and effects seen on real thing may suffer.
Well, Im not the one hunting for perfection though... :)

I'm so happy emulators do not show grey-dot stuff.. I absolutely hate that. A good reason not to use a new VIC.
